Emergency Services

The following are emergency services for the homeless population in Sacramento County. Additional transitional and permanent housing programs are coordinated through Sacramento Steps Forward (SSF). If you are not already working with SSF, please contact them to find out how to be assessed for transitional or permanent housing - 916-577-9770.

Emergency Shelters (overnight sleeping)

Adults General Populations

The Salvation Army, 12th and North B Street

  • Adult men & women
  • Registration between 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Salvation Army lobby
  • Must check in between 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.
  • 30 - 60 day shelter

Safe Ground Pilgrimage, Rotating churches downtown

  • Adult men & women
  • Look at calendar
  • Arrive no earlier than 5 p.m. at host church, check out 7 a.m.
  • Shelters typically only available Monday nights and some various weeknights throughout the month
  • Bed count varies, shelter often limited to 75 guests, 60+ and severely handicapped priority admission

VOA A Street Shelter, 1400 North A Street, Building B

  • Adult men
  • Must arrive Mondays at 8 p.m. to add name to weekly priority list
  • Only available beds given to those on list at 8 p.m. each night

Union Gospel Mission, 400 Bannon Street

  • Adult men
  • Arrive at 5:30 p.m. with Identification and Tuberculosis test
  • Out between 5:30 - 6:30 a.m.
  • Max stay of 7 days

WIND TAY Shelter, Confidential

  • Youth 18 - 24
  • Must go to drop in center, 3671 5th Avenue, to get on wait list
  • Call and check in once a week
  • Miss 3 weeks, then dropped

VOA Senior Safe House, Confidential

  • Adults age 62 or older
  • Referral through Adult Protective Services
  • Only abused, neglected, or exploited seniors

Families

Family Promise Center, Rotating host congregations

  • Parents and their minor child(ren)
  • Must call center to apply to the program, 916-443-3107
  • Must pass a phone interview to verify qualification
  • Sleeping at host congregations, then transported back to the Family Promise Day Center for services during daytime
  • Length of stay is on case by case basis

  • Self-register

VOA Family Shelter, Bannon Street

  • Parents and their minor child(ren)
  • Self-register

Francis House Family Rescue, Various motels

  • Parents and their minor child(ren)
  • Must apply at Francis House on Mondays from 1 - 3 p.m.
  • Provides motel vouchers to 4 families for 7 days

St. John's Program for Real Change, Closed campus (confidential)

  • Women and their minor child(ren)
  • Must call to get on wait list, 916-453-1482
  • Must check in each day until spot opens up
  • Interviewed to see if able to participate

Medical Conditions

VOA Open Arms Shelter, Confidential

  • Adults with HIV or AIDS
  • Must receive referral by doctor
  • Must have Tuberculosis test, proof of viral illness, and homeless certification

Sister Nora's Place, Loaves & Fishes, 1351 North C Street

  • Chronically homeless women with a mental health diagnosis
  • Must go through Genesis to get a referral for program
  • No predetermined length of stay

Comprehensive Alcohol Treatment Center, Confidential

  • Adults under the influence of alcohol
  • Referrals through Sacramento law enforcement or DA only

Pregnant/ Youth

WIND Youth Shelter, Confidential

  • Youth ages 12 - 17
  • Must call shelter hotline first for assessment, 800-339-7177
  • Must receive referral to wait list before acceptance
  • 6 beds/ 21 day shelter

Sacramento Children's Home, 4533 Pasadena Avenue & 6699 South Land Park Drive

  • Youth ages 0 - 5
  • Call 916-679-3600 or 916-394-2000
  • Can bring children for emergency care or overnight sleeping
  • Children may stay up to 30 days

Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home, South Sacramento

  • Pregnant women

Domestic Violence/ Sex

WEAVE Safe house, Confidential

  • Adult female survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and kids
  • Must call 916-920-2952 crisis support line to receive an assessment to be entered into the program

WEAVE Open House, Confidential

  • Domestic violence survivors
  • Call 916-920-2952 crisis support line for assessment
  • Can stay up to 2 years

My Sister's House Safe Haven Shelter, Confidential

  • Women and children survivors of domestic violence
  • Target toward Asian and Pacific Islander women
  • Must call 916-428-3271 for assessment
  • 13 beds/ 30 day shelter

A Community for Peace: Harmony House, Citrus Heights (confidential)

  • Women and children survivors of domestic violence
  • Call crisis hotline, 916-728-7210, or referrals by police/ hospitals
  • Only those considered to be in imminent danger
  • Stay 2 - 3 days or case by case basis; 24/7 access

  • Adults
  • 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., lunch daily from 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.

  • Restroom/ wash house (men only from 7 - 10 a.m. and 12 - 1:45 p.m.
