Mayor Steinberg Announces City of Sacramento Will Lead Nation as First Full Scale 5G Deployment

Partners with Verizon to deliver first commercial 5G service to customers

December 1, 2017

Today Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg joined Verizon in announcing that their first commercial launch will be in Sacramento - the first scaled commercial practical implementation of 5G in the nation. It's expected to be implemented in the second half of 2018.

This deployment will deliver super high-speed wireless 5G connectivity for Sacramento businesses and residents who will be the first to experience gigabit speeds that were previously only available via costly fiber.
"I'm thrilled that Verizon has chosen Sacramento as the first market it plans to launch 5G wireless broadband service. This is the perfect complement to the vision and spirit of our previously announced public private partnership," said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg. "It's another game changing moment for our city as we demonstrate Sacramento is the leading place to be, experience, and create the future."

Sacramento continues its emergence as a leader and innovator with this latest partnership and groundbreaking step with Verizon.
"This is a landmark announcement for customers and investors who have been waiting for the 5G future to become a reality," said Hans Vestberg, Verizon president of Global Networks and Chief Technology Officer. "We appreciate our strong ecosystem partners for their passion and technological support in helping us drive forward with 5G industry standards, for both fixed and mobile applications. The targeted initial launches we are announcing today will provide a strong framework for accelerating 5G's future deployment on the global standards."

Technologies like 5G promise to revolutionize the daily lives of people in ways that we can only imagine. The City plays an important role and is actively working to streamline the development processes and effectively and efficiently pave the way for innovators like Verizon to implement technologies that will drive economic vitality and close access barriers and gaps to serve our diverse communities.

"This is a game changer for the residents of our City, cities across the nation, and the industry! This is exactly what we were shooting for when we established the partnership with Verizon in June of this year - a partnership that enables the City to demonstrate innovation in the real world and allow us to lean forward so that the we can leverage technology and collaborative relationships for the benefit of our community," said Maria MacGunigal, Chief Information Officer for the City of Sacramento.

This initiative builds on the pilot 5G deployment previously announced in February 2017 and the establishment of an official Public Private Partnership between the City of Sacramento and Verizon in June 2017. This development is part of a much broader push by the City to develop policy and streamlined processes to leverage emerging technologies and create public-private partnerships to help provide services more efficiently, meet diverse community needs, and reduce resource consumption.

Early initiatives such as this show how the City of Sacramento is open to helping solve tech problems and the potential for public-private partnerships to help foster key quality of life improvements across sectors, communities and issues with tech solutions helping to solve other issues.
