Memorial Auditorium

During the renovation of the Sacramento Community Center Theater, the Memorial Auditorium will host all scheduled performing arts events during the renovation. Through an analysis of the Theater and the Auditorium, it was determined that improvements would need to be made to the Auditorium prior to the relocation of the events. These recommendations include temporary and permanent improvements, and focus on improving the facility’s functional and technical capacity to host performing arts events.

The renovations will not only enhance the patron experience during the season when events are relocated from the Theater, but also will improve the Auditorium’s capabilities in the long term. Permanent improvements will include:

  • Acoustic Enhancements at Upper Balcony
  • New Audience Seating at Orchestra Level
  • Refurbished Audience Seating at Dress Circle and First Balcony Levels
  • Refurbished Rigging System
  • Upgraded Structural Capacity for Stage and Audience Chamber

Community Center Theater

The Sacramento Community Center Theater opened in 1976 and has not been expanded nor undergone any renovations over the past four decades. The Theater is the only performing arts facility of its size, with 2,398 seats plus 54 seating areas for wheelchairs, and currently serves as home to many performing arts groups. Extensive Theater renovations are needed to continue serving arts patrons and performance groups, to maintain the facility’s competitive position in the region, and to address building requirements, accessibility code requirements, and operational needs that have changed over the past four decades.

The Theater is scheduled to begin construction in June of 2019. The Theater will undergo a renovation and expansion which will update the performing arts venue, as well as an expansion, which will include creating a prominent main entrance along L Street. Additional improvements to the Theater will include:

  • Improved Accessibility (ADA)
  • New L Street Entry with Expanded Lobby and Upgraded Finishes
  • Additional Restrooms and Concessions Areas
  • Enhanced Donor Lounge with Dedicated Restrooms
  • New Audience Chamber Layout
  • New Multi-Purpose Room
  • New AV, Theatrical Lighting and Dimming Systems
  • Expanded and Refurbished Dressing Room and Chorus Room
  • Reconfigured and Expanded Loading Dock, Scene Dock and Storage Rooms
  • Acoustic Enhancements in Audience Chamber and Orchestra Pit

Convention Center

The Sacramento Convention Center opened in 1974 and went through an expansion and renovation in 1996, adding street level exhibition space and an upstairs ballroom east of the original building. While the Convention Center is well-positioned within California’s capital city, its competitive position continues to decline as other cities invest in hospitality, entertainment and retail sectors by renovating and expanding their convention centers.

In May of 2017, the Sacramento City Council approved a plan to move forward with design plans to renovate and expand the Convention Center. The project objectives include maximizing the Convention Center space, improving event flexibility, and improving the guest experience by improving the circulation through and around the building.

The first phase of the project will include a significant expansion of the exhibit hall space, new lobbies on the east and west side of the building, an expanded kitchen, and the addition of over 14,000 SF of new meeting space. Additionally, a new activities plaza will be created between the two buildings on K Street. In the second phase, the date still yet to be determined, the addition of a 40,000 SF ballroom will be added to the third floor along with a new kitchen.
