VPN Access

VPN access is an advanced connection tool that enables users to send and receive data across shared or public networks as if their computing devices were directly connected to the private network. VPN access must be provided by the IT Service Desk, but first you should know when you need VPN access:

You Do Not Need VPN access

You do not need a VPN account to use the following information systems:

You Might Need VPN Access

You might need a VPN account if you are accessing other systems. Visit the Help page to contact the IT Service Desk if you are unsure.

You Will Need VPN Access

You will need a VPN account to remotely access your office computer.

How to Get VPN Access

VPN access is requested as part of the telecommute request process.

  1. Fill out the Employee Information, Supervisor/Manager Information, and Department Director sections of the telecommute request form.

  2. Assuming you meet the criteria for VPN access, select "I need VPN access," and submit the form.

  3. You will receive two emails from Sac Sign (echosign@echosign.com).

  4. The first email will request that you sign the City’s Telecommute Policy. Click the "Review and Sign" button in the email to initiate the signing process. Next, follow the instructions to sign the policy document and complete the detail justification form.

  5. The second email will request that you sign the City’s VPN request form. Click the "Review and Sign" button in the email to initiate the signing process, then follow the instructions to sign the document.

  6. Once completed, the IT Service Desk will contact you with directions and you will be able to use the VPN.

What systems don't need a VPN account to access?
How do I locate my computer/workstation number or name?
The computer number is on the asset tag affixed to your computer. If it is a laptop, it may be on the underside.
How long does it take to receive a VPN account?
VPN accounts are usually provisioned within one business day after your manager has approved your request. Once your manager has approved your request, you can check your request status by visiting the IT Service Desk portal and selecting Requests at the top of the page.
