DISTRICT 4 ANNOUNCES MAJOR UPDATES TO SITING PLAN IMPLEMENTATION

Sacramento, CA (12/16/21) – Councilmember Katie Valenzuela, in partnership with Mayor Darrell Steinberg, today announced major updates to the implementation of the Comprehensive Siting Plan to Address Homelessness in District 4. Specifically, Councilmember Valenzuela is adding a new safe camping location, a new proposed site for permanent housing, and dropping the previously proposed tiny home village proposal under Highway 50.

LETTER TO CITY RE: BUDGET REQUESTS

Dear Mayor Steinberg, City Councilmembers, and City Manager Chan:

In the year I’ve been in office, I’ve heard from thousands of people regarding their concerns and ideas about needed improvements in their neighborhoods. When I bring these community concerns to staff, I hear a lot of support and empathy for the issues raised, but it is often followed by a somber realization: there isn't a sufficient budget to provide these services.

WX Community Outreach Timeline

We’ve been hearing some misinformation about the community outreach our office undertook during the process leading up to the identification of the safe ground sites along the WX corridor between 18th & 24th Streets. There are claims that we did not attempt to reach out to communities in good faith. In the interest of full transparency and to answer questions that have been raised, we would like to provide some context to set the factual record straight.

Update: Safe Ground at W/X, Data & Outcomes 

The safe ground site at WX between 6th and 8th Streets near Southside Park will soon begin to phase down to allow the return of the farmer’s market once Caltrans has completed their construction in the area.  We are currently looking for assistance from our County and Caltrans partners to safely relocate unhoused residents along the WX corridor in the next few months. We are also in the process of studying the data we’ve collected since the site opened so that we can move forward with future sites in an informed and effective way.
