Important, Read Before Registering:

  • Each passenger must complete and sign a Registration Form. Spouses may use one form and sign for each other.
  • Only two disabled persons requiring use of a wheelchair can be accommodated on each trip due to limited space on the bus. Disabled persons requiring such an accommodation will be selected based on the date of their registration.
  • Passengers requiring the use of a walker must be able to fold it so that it can be stored and does not block the aisle.
  • Only a service or companion animal required for a disability accommodation is allowed on the trip. Some animals may not be able to be accommodated on the bus based on size or type, or the number of animals on the bus. All service animals must be trained and all animals must be well-behaved, under leash or voice command control, at all times, not disruptive to the driver or other passengers, and the owner is responsible to clean up after their animal and pay for any damages caused by their animal. The City is also not responsible if the businesses where the trip will tour cannot accommodate your animal inside their premises. Only animals that have been pre-approved are allowed on the bus. If you need to bring your service or companion animal on this trip, please list the type and size of the animal on the registration form.
  • Programs are subject to change or cancellation.
  • What happens if I must cancel my reservation?  We will issue you a refund of fees paid up to that point less $10 per person reservation, as long as we receive the City Excursions Revision/Request Form prior to the Deadline for Reservation Date. After that date, refunds will not be issued.

Gilded Age in San Francisco

Saturday, July 21, 2018

Please join us for a journey through San Francisco’s glorious architectural past. We will start our day walking through one of the city’s richest Victorian neighborhoods, Alamo Square. The homes here are among the finest examples of Italianate and Queen Anne Victorians to be found in San Francisco. 144 of these beautifully restored homes have had their histories researched back to the original owners, and your professional guide will be sharing the best of these stories with you. Our walk will finish with a house tour of the Fisk Mansion. This grand old home was lovingly restored by owners Jim Warshell and Gail Baugh, who will be conducting the tour. Their home is filled with an eclectic collection of fine antiques and furnishings. We will see the main floor parlors, finely tiled fireplaces, dining room, offices, and kitchen, followed by the second-floor bedrooms and “fainting room”, and finally the third floor ballroom, rooftop garden, and conservatory.

After touring Alamo Square, we will have lunch at Max’s Opera Café before moving on to our next tour, San Francisco City Hall. San Francisco’s Civic Center contains a very impressive collection of “Beau Arts”, or Greek revival government buildings. The crowning achievement of this collection is city hall, or as it is more affectionately known, “the granite lady”. It is one of the grandest buildings on the west coast, and is larger than most state capitol buildings. Built in 1915 to replace the city hall destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire, no expense was spared in her construction. Many of the exterior details are adorned with 23.5 carat gold leaf, and the rotunda was styled after St Peters basilica. The interior is a masterpiece of marble, metalwork, and sculpture. Your guide will walk you through this government palace and share its history, secrets, and the amazing details of its recent seismic retrofit.

We sincerely hope you will join us on this special San Francisco excursion.
