Contemporary Muslim Fashions & GAUGUIN: A Spiritual Journey

Two incredible exhibits at the de Young Museum in San Francisco

Saturday,  January 5, 2019

Featuring the first exhibition that examines how Muslim women—those who cover their heads and those who do not—have become arbiters of style, and in so doing have drawn attention to contemporary Muslim life. Spotlighting places, garments, and styles from around the world, this exhibition shows high-end fashion in colors such as red, white, yellow and other bright hues. It shows different religious interpretations and cultures, from high-end fashion designers, such as those by Malaysia-based Blancheur; street wear, such as modest designs from London-based Sarah Elenany; sportswear, such as the burkini; and commissioned garments from designers. Headphones are included for the exhibit. Don’t miss out on this first major museum exhibition of Muslim dress codes worldwide.

And added bonus today is the Gaugin exhibition. This is also a first for the Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco. More than fifty Gauguin paintings, wood carvings, and ceramics from renowned collections from Copenhagen. The exhibitions explores Gauguin’s spiritual journey - and how his intimate relationships with his wife, other artists and people he encountered during his sojourns as an artist. These stories highlighted throughout the exhibit reveal his struggles, indulgences and betrayals of his personal and profession life that infused his extraordinary art as he traveled beyond France to New Zealand, Tahiti and other points of the French colonial empire in the Pacific.
