  • No prior experience on a board and commission is required.
  • Commission members are expected to be committed, open to learning, willing to contribute, enthusiastic, and passionate.
  • Review the qualifications of each open seat.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Commissioner Qualifications:

Eligibility Qualifications of a SYC Member?

  • Must be at least 14 years of age and not older than 22 years of age at the time of appointment AND
  • Attend a high school in the Sacramento city limits OR live in the Sacramento city limits

 What Skills are needed to be a SYC Member?

process to become a commissioner

1. APPLY ONLINE
Apply online to fill a Seat Vacancy.
2. OFFICE OF THE CITY CLERK REVIEW
City Clerk staff does a preliminary review of application.
3. Orientation
Sacramento Youth Commission Orientation
3. COUNCIL/MAYOR REVIEW
Supplemental application. Clerks staff forwards applications to district staff for councilmember review.
4. COUNCILMEMBER RECOMMENDATION
Once a when selection is made the name is provided to the City Clerk staff
5. MAYOR NOMINATION
Mayor makes the formal nomination at a City Council meeting and names are read into the public record.
6. CITY COUNCIL APPOINTMENT
Two weeks after the Mayoral appointment is announced the Sacramento City Council approves the appointment during a City Council meeting.
7. LETTER OF APPOINTMENT
Once appointment has been made you will receive an official Letter of Appointment from the Office of the City Clerk.
8. OATH OF OFFICE SUBMISSION
Commissioners are required to complete ethics training along with the submission of an Oath of Office.
9. SYC STAFF CONTACT
SYC Coordinator will contact you with details and paperwork to complete before your first official SYC meeting.
10.ATTEND 1ST SYC MEETING
You will be provided with your agenda packet for your first meeting where you will begin to represent the youth of your community!
