HOW TO BECOME A COMMISSIONER

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND SELECTION PROCESS

Commissioner Qualification Requirements:

  • Reside or attend school in the City of Sacramento 
  • Between the ages of 14-19

Benefits

  • Offers chances to meet motivated youth from around the city. 
  • Financially compensates time and effort with stipends. 

Approval date: June 15, 1993 - March 11, 1997 (Adopted via resolution)

DISTRICT APPOINTMENT PROCESS

1. APPLY ONLINE
Apply online to fill a Seat Vacancy.
2. CITY CLERK REVIEW
City Clerk does a preliminary review of application.
3. SYC STAFF REVIEW
The boards contact reviews to ensure applicants meet qualifications.
4. COUNCIL REVIEW
Clerks office sends applications to district staff for council member review.
5. COUNCIL SELECTION
Once the district has made their selection the council district then advises the City Clerk.
6. MAYOR NOMINATION
Mayor makes the formal nomination at a City Council meeting.
7. CITY COUNCIL APPOINTMENT
Two weeks after the Mayoral appointment is announced Sacramento City Council makes the appointment during a council meeting.
8. LETTER OF APPOINTMENT
Once appointment has been made you will receive an official Letter of Appointment from the City Clerk’s office.
9. OATH OF OFFICE
Ethics training requirements must be met along with the Oath of Office.
10. SYC Meeting
SYC coordinator will contact you with details and paperwork to complete before your first meeting. Show up and Represent your Community!

AT-LARGE APPOINTMENT PROCESS

1. APPLY ONLINE
Apply online to fill a Seat Vacancy.
2. CITY CLERK REVIEW
City Clerk does a preliminary review of application.
3. SYC STAFF REVIEW
The boards contact reviews to ensure applicants meet qualifications.
4. PERSONNEL & PUBLIC EMPLOYEES COMMITTEE (P & PE) INTERVIEW
Interviews are scheduled for the next available P & PE meeting.
5. P & E NOMINATION
Once P & PE makes the nomination it moves on to the Mayor’s office.
6. MAYOR NOMINATION
Mayor makes the formal nomination at a City Council meeting.
7. CITY COUNCIL APPOINTMENT
Two weeks after the Mayoral appointment is announced Sacramento City Council makes the appointment during a council meeting.
