2002 Director's Cup Goes to Roosevelt Park Maintenance Crew

June 11, 2002, Sacramento, California - Roosevelt Park at 9th and P Streets in downtown Sacramento was chosen as the best maintained City of Sacramento park during the second annual Department of Parks and Recreation Director's Cup.

The judges, including members of the Citizen's Advisory Committee for Parks and Recreation, toured eight parks on May 17, 2002. Each site was carefully reviewed and scored based on this year's competition theme of "Sports Fields". Each Parks Supervisor chose one park in their geographic maintenance area to be judged.

Tahoe Tallac Park placed second, and the Sacramento Softball Complex at Del Paso Regional Park came in third. The other nominated sites were Reichmuth Park, William Land Park Diamond No. 1, Gardenland Park, Pannell Meadowview Park, and McKinley Park.

The winning maintenance crew is Parks Supervisor Jerry Silva, park maintenance workers Michael Lujan, Eddie Quintana, and Miguel Barajas, assisted by support staff Joe Gallegos, Armando Tovar, Johnny Gonzales, Gonzalo Albor, Raul Borrego, and Manuel Morales. The crew will receive certificates of recognition, enjoy a celebration lunch, and have their names engraved on a perpetual trophy.

Roosevelt Park is a popular site for nearby residents and workers to enjoy lunch or a green space break, join in a pick-up basketball game, or shop during the Downtown Certified Farmers' Market on Tuesdays.

The Director's Cup was implemented in 2001 to provide an opportunity for park crews to showcase their maintenance expertise in a friendly competitive atmosphere. Last year's winning site was McClatchy Park
