Dutch Elm Diseased Trees Removed

Community Plants New Trees on Veteran’s Day
Tuesday, November 11, 2003, 10 a.m., 7800 Block of Freeport Blvd.

Sacramento, California, November 10, 2003 – While some people take Veteran’s Day as an opportunity to sleep-in, or perhaps get-a-way for an extended weekend, others take the time to recognize veterans in different and special ways.

This Veteran’s Day a special tree planting will occur when the Veteran's Memorial Victory Tree Committee will plant 11 hybrid Dutch Elm disease resistant trees in Sacramento. The Committee and staff from the City of Sacramento Tree Services Division will plant the trees along the 7800 block of Freeport Blvd. from 10 a.m. to around Noon.

The American Elm trees along the 7800 block of Freeport Blvd. were planted more than 80 years ago in memory of World War I veterans. The Veteran’s Memorial Victory Tree Committee is planting the 11 new trees to maintain the honor, respect and memory of these veterans. For the last several years the City of Sacramento has experienced a significant amount of American Elm trees afflicted with Dutch Elm disease on a citywide scale often resulting in the removal of the trees.

Martin Fitch, City of Sacramento Tree Services Superintendent, will be on-site for the tree planting and can be contacted at (916) 719-9514.
