Sacramento’s Fountain of Youth

2004 Senior Games Coming to Sacramento

Sacramento, California, March 22, 2004 – Mark your calendars because this is much more than just an athletic event!!! The 14th annual California Senior Games, Sacramento Sports Classic is just around the corner. Meet athletes that personify the will to persevere, stay healthy, be a role model, be positive, challenge oneself, beat the odds and live life to the fullest. It is about motivated and dedicated individuals who are 50 years of age and older going for the GOLD! Someone has unlocked the secrets to the Fountain of Youth.

The Sacramento Sports Classic is an annual event that offers athletic competition for adults age 50 years and older...The games are a multi-sport event for men and women patterned after the "Olympics" and held at various locales throughout the Sacramento area. The Sacramento Senior Games is one of 8 California Senior Games throughout the state, all of which are members of the National Senior Games Association.

All athletes who participate in the 2004 Sacramento Sports Classic are automatically qualified to participate in the 2004 California State Championships being held in June 2004 in Pasadena, California. State Championships serve as the qualifier for the Nationals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 2006. The Nationals offer competition to 10,000-12,000 athletes, making it the largest multi-sport event to take place in the U.S.

There are 20 various sporting events offered including, archery, basketball, bowling, cycling, race walk, rowing, soccer, swimming, tennis, and track and field. The majority of the events of the Sacramento Senior Games 2004 will be held on May 14th-16th. The Cycling competition will be held on April 17th, the Soccer competition will be held on May 1st and 2nd, and the Archery competition will be held on May 8th.

Competitors from all over Northern California participate each year. They range in ability from novice, to those returning to the sport of their youth, and to accomplished athletes. Competition is divided into 5-year increments and medals are awarded to the top three in each age bracket. The California Senior Games offers something for everyone’s skill level and interest.

This event attracts an average of 800 senior athletes and 1000s of volunteers, spectators and fans during the weekend competition. Across the country there are about a total of 250,000 athletes who compete in local Games.

The primary goal of the Sacramento Sports Classic is to promote health and fitness in adults 50 years and older through exercise, training, athletic competition and fun!
