Southside
Accessible Playground Wins Special Achievement Award
from the California Park and Recreation Society District II
Sacramento, California, March 31, 2006
– The City of Sacramento Department of Parks and Recreation has
received a Special Achievement Award from the California Park and Recreation
Society (CPRS) District II for Southside Accessible Playground.
The exceptionally-Accessible Playground was planned
and constructed through a unique partnership between the City of Sacramento,
Sutter Health and United Cerebral Palsy, and other community partners.
The colorful, galaxy-themed playground is an integrated and intergenerational-use
facility that is open to everyone, including children with disabilities,
able-bodied children, parents, grandparents and caregivers.
The 2006 CPRS District II Awards Program celebrates
the uniqueness of the contributions made by both professionals and
community volunteers in "Creating
Community" and furthering the parks, recreation and human services
movement. Awards were presented at CRPS District II Annual Awards
Banquet on March 3, 2006 at Sacramento's Clunie Community Center.
The District II Awards Program is modeled, in part, after the CPRS State
Awards Program in recognizing professional achievement in marketing and
promotion, facility design and maintenance and recreation/community service
programs.
The Special Achievement Award recognizes a significant
contribution, or achievement in Parks and Recrecreation profession by
an agency, organization, or individual. Parks and Recreation staff
members recognzied for their contributions to the development of Southside
Accessible Playground were Tin-Wah Wong, Landscape Architect for Park
Planning, Design and Development Services; Janet Baker, Manager of Park
Planning, Design and Development Services; and Bonnie Williamson, Administrative
Analyst for Recreation and Human Services.
CPRS is a membership organization
with 4,200 members representing the 525 local parks and recreation agencies
in the state. District II serves 19 counties in Northern California.
The mission of CPRS is to provide the leadership and resources to promote
the role of parks and recreation
in creating community through people, parks, and programs.
