Doc Oliver Field Completely Renovated in Time for Easter Baseball Tournament
Sacramento, California, April 6, 2001
- Beginning Monday, April 9, 2001, the 24th annual Land Park Easter Tournament
begins at Land Park's Doc Oliver Field. Varsity ball players from 12 high
schools from throughout the Sacramento area will compete for the coveted
title.
Concurrently, the City of Sacramento is reopening Doc
Oliver Field after more than four months of intensive rehabilitation and
renovation by the Parks Maintenance section of the Department of Parks
and Recreation.
"It's a great job that has been done on Doc Oliver
Field for the benefit of baseball plays and spectators," said Councilmember
Jimmie Yee. "The infield and outfield looks even more impressive
than the Rivercats' park at Raley Field. Major work has been done on the
backstop and spectator seating, too. Our Parks Maintenance staff has really
done a super job!"
200 ball players are competing throughout the week for
the coveted title. Among the many spectators will include several professional
baseball scouts from the major leagues. "A tournament like this is
a major league scout's dream come true. No doubt some of these ball players
are destined for bigger and betters things in their future," said
Councilmember Yee.
The Easter Tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. on Monday,
April 9th, with a brief ceremony at Doc Oliver Field, which is located
Land Park Drive and 11th Avenue in the northwest section of the park.
