The Career Development classes below are offered at least once
during the calendar year through City University and upon departmental
request.
Career Exploration And Planning
This class focuses on career planning for employees who seek realistic
avenues for advancement. You will take a career assessment survey, Elevations™,
a tool that will help identify occupations you may want to explore.
You will learn:
· A modern career development model and how to take control of
your career development
· How your values, skills, personality, and interests match careers
in the work world
· How to identify various City of Sacramento career paths that
can enhance your strengths and interests
· To design your goals to complement your current career opportunity
· How to develop a career action plan for career satisfaction
and rejuvenation
Dynamics Of Career Advancement
This workshop features the Multicultural Promotion Track Simulation,
which is used by organizations to teach leadership, diversity and critical-thinking
skills.
You will learn:
· Conventional wisdom models for career advancement
· Real-world models for career advancement
· Surreal models for career advancement
· Career advancement ethics
· Discrimination on the career ladder
· Career advancement: A joint venture with the organization
Employment Applications and Test-Taking Strategies
This course combines the tools and techniques to create strong “screened
in” City employment applications and to learn how to effectively
take oral and written employment tests at the City.
You will learn:
· To read job announcements critically to discover “what they
are looking for”
· Understand what an application reveals about you as an applicant
· Tips about the supplemental questionnaire
· Testing strategies for better time-management and reduced anxiety
· Organizational techniques and relaxation tips to get you through the
oral and written testing process
· Writing skills that effectively communicate your answer
· How to maximize your chances of increasing your ranking
Finding Your Purpose And Passion
Do you sometimes question where your life is headed? This
life-changing program will help you take charge of your life by defining
your purpose and discovering your passion. This program will
provide the foundation for writing your personal mission statement
which acts as a motivating force to help you lead a more meaningful

How To Get The Mentoring You Need To Get Ahead In Your Career
Do you know what it takes to find and keep good mentors? Mentoring
is a useful strategy to help you get ahead in your career. This program
will help you successfully select, approach and secure a mentor’s help.
You will learn:
· How to identify your development needs, and determine how a mentor
can help
· How to indentify potential mentors or coaches
· How to approach potential mentors with specific requests
· How to establish a mentoring partnership
Interviewing Techniques For Success
Has it been many years since your last interview? Did you just
recently interview, but it did not go as well as you would have liked?
Competition for City jobs has intensified. Being qualified and experienced

effectively communicate and present their knowledge, skills, abilities,
