Why History Day?
History Day is a performance-based academic endeavor that fully supports the California History-Social Science Framework and History/Social Science Content Standards. History Day provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities to apply learned information through authentic assessment in student-outcome products and can easily be integrated into the everyday classroom curriculum.
The History Day program:
- gives a model teaching tool for the classroom, based on active learning
- is easily content-adaptable
- caters to specific needs and interests of students of all different levels and abilities
- supports high academic standards by including varied methods of participation and interdisciplinary approaches
- inherently produces a progressive stream of evaluation of student product for evaluation and assessment
- helps teachers meet the requirements of state history standards
- helps teachers integrate the study of history with other disciplines, including writing, the arts, and other social sciences
- encourages students to interact with academic historians, librarians, archivists, and public historians.
By participating in History Day, students are embarking on an exciting experience that will teach them new skills, strengthen ones they already have, and utilize their many talents. History Day in California is an exciting way to understand history and explore the past. The competition invites students to research topics related to this year’s theme: Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History. This broad theme allows students to select and research an endless number of topics, from local to world history, and from ancient time to the recent past.
