Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
Department Directors
City of Sacramento, California
Due to recent incidents of anthrax, and the potential for actual biological agents or hoaxes to be sent through the mail, it is important that we exercise care and caution in dealing with incoming mail and packages. Attached are precautions to be taken when handling mail and packages delivered to offices of the City of Sacramento. Also attached you will find information about anthrax through the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
A team of individuals comprised of members from the Police, Fire and Human Resources Departments are working together to formulate a formal training program that will be delivered to all city employees on this very disturbing issue. The delivery of this training, as well as training in other precautionary security and critical incident preparedness will start to be delivered this week. The information on the topics to be presented and the location of the training classes will be made available as they are developed. We want to encourage all of our appropriate employees to attend. Fear and apprehension is high and perfectly understandable. While it is unlikely that such a catastrophic incident will occur in our city, through education and training we hope to relieve some of the fear and anxiety that is within us all. Familiarizing ourselves with precautionary measures will also increase our preparedness and ability to more appropriately respond should one occur.
Sincerely,
| ROBERT P. THOMAS | ARTURO VENEGAS, JR. | DENNIS SMITH |
| City Manager | Chief of Police | Fire Chief |
