In the last 4 years, we’ve built or are building 5,500,000 square feet of new restaurants, hotels, condos, shops, space for arts and entertainment, as well as offices in downtown Sacramento.  That’s a lot of jobs, housing and fun.  Also approved - another 8,000,000 square feet not including the 10,000,000 more once we get the Railyards project going.

Our progress downtown generates funds we’re using to provide police and fire services and build parks, community centers and libraries in our neighborhoods which are all improving. None of this easy. I couldn’t do any of it without my colleagues on the City Council, our terrific city staff, our community and business partners throughout the City.

I see the progress because I work every day to make it happen. I know there’s more to be done.

I lead by consensus. Most City Council votes are unanimous. And we’re going in the right direction.

On a personal note, my health is good but my multiple sclerosis makes it harder to walk. A good Mayor needs a good heart, a good head and a strong backbone and that’s what I’ve got. I’d love to have your vote so I can finish what I’ve started.

I was born and raised in Sacramento and believe that we can make it a city that works for everyone.  People want to see a change in our city.  Through strong leadership and clear vision, I can bring this change about. We can create new excitement, energy and momentum in the city through accountability, focus on results and bold action.

What the citizens of Sacramento want is simple. We want safe neighborhoods and streets.  We want great schools for our children.  Residents need access to jobs and affordable housing. We should have a strong, growing economy and an effective city government.

Sacramento can unite around this vision.  It is possible.  The work I’ve done has shown that. Over the last five years, I’ve worked to revitalize Oak Park.  I have led efforts that resulted in the transformation of Sacramento High School, the creation of 17 businesses, 275 jobs, $11 million in economic development, and $14 million in philanthropic giving in the community.

Together, we can do the same thing across the city.  As an elected official and public servant, I will be dedicated to ensuring we are a vibrant, safe city with a strong economy and excellent public schools.

Candidates for City Council

District 2, Sandy Sheedy -

Everything I ever needed to know about being a City Councilwoman, I learned being a mother.  Every mother knows about tough love.  A city needs someone to be tough.

I wrote the toughest illegal dumping ordinance in California; no one has the right to disrespect our homes, streets, and neighborhoods.  I got tough on dangerous dogs.  People who own dogs have a responsibility to kids who are playing, seniors out strolling, and moms walking their babies.

We cracked down on tobacco retailers selling to kids, payday loan operators, and slumlords who cheat their tenants and wreck our neighborhoods.  If you do business in our neighborhoods, do it responsibly or watch out for me!

But a city needs love too.  We built the new Hagginwood Community Center and we’re opening new after-school teen programs because good kids stay good if we give them good things to do.

I worked hard for a new Fire Station and better parks in every neighborhood I represent.  We added streetscapes and stop lights, brought in new businesses, and housing that working families can afford.  I want every Sacramentan to live in a neighborhood they love.  I love representing you on the City Council.

Sacramento's possibilities are limitless. We are California's Capital City.  I believe in a Sacramento that celebrates its history and embraces its future.  A destination city with great neighborhoods.

I am spearheading a new vision for Broadway––a grand, old corridor where the vibrancy of downtown blends into the gateway to Land Park. We brought Light Rail to City College and have taken the first steps to bring it to the airport.

We are rebuilding downtown––new hotels, offices, condos, and restaurants.  We are revitalizing our waterfront, repairing our levees, and developing new parks.  But nothing is more important than our neighborhoods.

Our police force has gotten better, our partnership with schools  has grown stronger, and our expansion of health care facilities has  set a standard for the state.  We remain committed to the arts, to our cultural diversity, and to an open government.

But there is more we can do, and I want to do it.  I see our Railyards as enormous opportunities for new, great neighborhoods.  K Street can be a centerpiece of civic pride.  And we can have a waterfront that is protected and prosperous.  I appreciate the chance to serve you and bring this vision to life.

District 6, Kevin McCarty -

I think you accomplish big things one neighborhood, one block, one school, one youngster at a time.  I never gave a speech about the City doing more to help schools. Instead, I raised private donations and created “Operation College” providing a full-time college counselor at Hiram Johnson High – and the number of seniors going to college jumped. My “Operation Success” is reducing truancy. And I started the Leon A. McCarty Sports Foundation (named after my late grandfather) because sports kept me out of trouble.

I approached crime the same way. No press conference. I worked quietly for months with the Police Chief on new ordinances to track illegal guns and ammunition. Then I built a consensus on the City Council. Today Sacramento is a leader in attacking guns used to commit crimes.

I am proud that my work on reducing pollution earned me the “Clean Air Leadership Award.” And after three years, I worked to develop a new ordinance to improve code enforcement for rental housing that holds irresponsible landlords accountable without penalizing good landlords.  I hope you will allow me to continue my work.

District 8, Bonnie Pannell -

“See the Progress, See the Difference.” No matter where you go in District Eight you can see the difference.

There is new vitality in the district. Each year new businesses – and the jobs they bring – have filled vacant store fronts and empty lots. New homes have brought energy that comes with kids and families.

Community policing and code enforcement have made our neighborhoods safer and cleaner. Light Rail is now available to thousands of commuters seeking an alternative to high gas prices.

I’m proud of these accomplishments, but I’m more excited about the future. My goals include increased flood protection on South Sacramento streams andfinishing the Florin Road Median to Freeport Boulevard . We’ll complete the Light Rail South Line Phase II Extension and open a new 20,000-square-foot library at Bruceville and Cotton Lane. I'll also bring new services and jobs to the area, including Fresh and Easy Grocery stores and a veterinary hospital at Meadowview Road and Freeport Boulevard .

Those are the kinds of results we’ve come to expect in District Eight. I pledge to continue working hard for you the next four years. Thank you for your vote to re-elect me to the City Council.
