Domestic Partnership

WHO MAY FILE FOR DOMESTIC PARTNERHSIP?

The City of Sacramento provides Domestic Partnership filing to qualified candidates.

Two people may file for Domestic Partnership, if:

  • They are both eighteen (18) years of age or older;
  • Neither is married
  • They are not related to each other in a way which would bar marriage in California
  • Neither is acting under fraud or duress, and both are competent to contract;
  • They reside together and share basic living expenses;
  • Each declares in writing, under penalty of perjury, that she or he is the other’s domestic partner; AND
  • Any different domestic partnership of which either was previously a member ended more than six months ago, except that this requirement does not apply if the earlier domestic partnership ended because of the death of one of its members

HOW DO YOU FILE FOR DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP?

Qualified applicants may submit a completed and properly notarized City of Sacramento Domestic Partnership Declaration with a $35.00 check or money order via mail to the City Clerk's Office.Your Declaration will be filed and a certificate will be mailed to you. 

Completed and notarized Domestic Partnership Declaration Application AND $35.00 check or money order can be mailed to:

Office of the City Clerk

Historic City Hall, 1st Floor

Sacramento, CA 95814

Both partners may appear at the Office of the City Clerk to file the Domestic Partnership Declaration in person. The Domestic Partnership Declaration will be notarized and filed with the City; and your certificate provided to registrants at that time. The fee for the notarization and certificate is $35.00.

The City of Sacramento Domestic Partnership filing is different then the State of California Domestic Partnership Registry.  You may want to review the information below to assist you in determining the best course of registration and filing for your circumstance. Visit the State of California Domestic Partnership website, for more additional information.

If you are wishing to terminate a Domestic Partnership on file with the City of Sacramento, you must file a Termination Form Termination of Domestic Partnership Form with the Office of the Clerk.
