Faith & Homeless Families Initiative

The Faith & Homeless Families Mentoring Program Pilot Project

Goal

Faith & Homeless Families, in partnership with Lutheran Social Services, aims to help families permanently avoid or escape homelessness by providing limited, temporary financial assistance for housing linked with economic stability counseling provided by mentors from the faith community.

Strategies

  1. Provide limited, short-term rent assistance to homeless families and families at risk of becoming homeless.
  2. Build partnerships between homeless family service providers and congregations to develop housing resources and supportive services.
  3.  Recruit volunteers from the faith community to help homeless families and families at risk of becoming homeless by providing support and encouragement as well as financial management and goal setting advice.
  4. Develop a Faith Leadership Council comprised of a diverse group of leaders from the faith community to oversee and advise the mentoring program.
  5. Develop a pilot program of at least five congregations to begin assisting families by early 2009.

The Problem

While chronic homelessness is decreasing, more families have become homeless due to the current economic and housing crisis. Many families that have few barriers to housing, who are employed and do not struggle with addictions or mental illness, need one time financial assistance and counseling to help them avoid the steep financial and social consequences of becoming homeless or lapsing into long term homelessness.

Faith & Homeless Families Mentoring Program

The philosophy of the Faith & Families Mentoring Program is based on developing relationships between homeless families and families at risk of homelessness and groups of volunteers from the faith community. The program will deliver short term rent assistance to families in exchange for their participation in the mentoring program.

The program will provide a well-defined way for the faith community to help the homeless as well as valuable services to homeless families:

            -Short term rent assistance

-Seven mentoring meetings over six months

            -Support from an experienced nonprofit

If you or your congregation would like to be involved or you have questions about the program, please contact Nora Benavides at (916) 281-6930 or through e-mail at n_bb@comcast.net

Hemispheres Arts Academy
Hemispheres Arts Academy is a non-profit organization dedicated to provide funds for visual & performing arts instruction for school age children in the greater Sacramento region.

Hemispheres Arts Academy was created by Councilmember Rob Fong in 2000, during his tenure on the Sacramento City Unified School District Board of Trustees. Recognizing the need to provide children with more creative opportunities due to a reduction in funding for school arts programs, Mr. Fong formed the non-profit as a free after school arts program with a mission of bringing students interested in the arts together with professional artists in Sacramento.

The program began with a $100,000 donation from Maloof Sports & Entertainment. Classes were held in the abandoned school district headquarters at 16th & N Streets. There, kids participated in all manner of visual and performing art classes, including photography, music, drawing, sculpture, drama, painting and dance.

Eventually the district needed to take the building back which caused Hemispheres to reinvent itself. Now, Hemispheres Arts Academy exists as a grant funding organization partnering with other non-profits and school districts who are committed to proving programs which allow children to have an educational experience infused by the magic and creativity of the visual and performing arts.

eComment

The City of Sacramento has launched eComment!

The City of Sacramento has launched eComment which enables constituents to play a more active role in their city government. With eComment constituents are now able to share their thoughts on upcoming agenda items via our website using eComment as a tool. Users can click on the eComment button on our agenda page, select the item they wish to comment on, indicate a position, and submit their written comment to be distributed to the Mayor and Councilmembers. eComment is available at the time the agenda is published and closes at 12:00pm on the day of the meeting.

It is a very easy to use tool that will help our City Staff have access to Sacramento City residents feedback about upcoming agenda items. We encourage you to go online and directly submit your thoughts on any agenda item and share this new way of participating in your local government with your friends and neighbors.

Advantages of eComment include the following:

>Reduces fuel emissions, traffic congestion, parking and other environmental side effects associated with travel to public meetings.

>Provides constituents an opportunity for participation when they can not be at a City Council meeting in person. Using eComment allows any person, any where to leave a comment on an agenda item via the internet.

>Allows for a central repository for comments that helps ensure the Council and City staff are in compliance with the Brown Act by having a transparent, predictable process for managing public comment that occurs outside the council chamber.

Therefore, next time you are watching a City Council meeting online at www.cityofsacramento.org, we encourage you to leave us your comments and concerns on current issues using our new tool, eComment.
