Project description

Calling all neighbors, cyclists, walkers, runners and trail goers! The City of Sacramento is continuing plans to provide more opportunities for cyclists and walkers to have more active transportation modes. The Del Rio Trail is a step in that direction as it helps to implement Sacramento’s Bikeway Master Plan.

The proposed 4.8-mile trail will run south through the Land Park, South Land Park, Freeport Manor, Z’Berg, Pocket and Meadowview neighborhoods between Interstate 5 and Freeport Boulevard (project map).

The Del Rio Trail is an inner-city trail that will allow cyclists, pedestrians, runners, and dog walkers to travel for miles to access schools, parks, retail centers, and jobs. It provides the potential for recreation amenities and will serve as an alternative commute route for people to bike to work rather than drive on freeways and boulevards.

This project, along with other projects the City is advancing, is part of the City’s goal to provide more opportunities for Sacramentans to be active and healthy while also protecting our environment.

Funding & schedule

The Sacramento City Council unanimously approved a resolution to establish the Del Rio Trail as a capital improvement project. The project has $2.2 million in secured funding for preliminary engineering, environmental clearance, and final design from the federal Active Transportation Program (ATP), through the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), and matching local transportation funds.The total project cost is approximately $16.5 million.

City staff started the public outreach and project planning phase from early 2017 to mid-2019. The Department of Public Works initiated the final design phase, which includes preparing construction plans, in Spring 2020. This phase will be followed by the construction phase, which began Spring 2022.
