Housing and Dangerous Buildings
Housing and Dangerous Buildings enforces City and State mandated codes relating to residential and commercial structures that are dangerous, substandard, blighted, or vacant. This division also enforces codes related to pests and mechanical noise through our environmental health section. Building inspections are performed for permit holders repairing or demolishing substandard structures.
Building owners are legally required to maintain their property to the standards set forth in the City Housing and Dangerous Building Codes. If a structure is to remain vacant for more than one month, the owner is required to pay a monitoring fee to the City. In addition, fines may be levied if the property is not clean and secure.
Common Code Violations
- Ceilings, roofs, vertical supports or other horizontal support that sag, split or buckle.
- Plumbing, electrical or mechanical hazards creating a danger to human health.
- Excessive infestations of rodents, cockroaches or other vector violations.
- Unsafe electrical outlets which present a clear and present danger of fire or electrocution.
- Un-inhabitable buildings due to a lack of care, cleanliness, or sanitary conditions.
- Defective or inadequate weather protection of exterior walls.
Use the Online Form to report a vacant structure that is a blight, conditions that violate the safety and habitability of a building, and residential vermin or other pest infestations. We have expanded our service so that you may now call 311 at any time 24/7 including holidays and weekends (call 916-264-5011 if you are calling outside the City limits).
