About the Guidelines
The guidelines have been extensively revised since the public draft document of November 2007. With more than 300 individual comments taken from the public, commissioners, councilmembers, the steering committee and staff, the document has benefited from careful scrutiny.
The major organization change in this final draft version is the division of the document into a series of Sections, which will incorporate all of the design guidelines governing design review in the Central City. Therefore, the Central City Urban Design Guidelines will exist as a compilation of all adopted guidelines for the Central City and each can be amended or new guidelines added, as required in the future. The current Urban Design Guidelines consist of the following sections:
Section 1- Introduction has been revised as a large purpose statement regarding the importance of urban design and architectural guidelines for the entire Central City.
Section 2 – Framework, summarizes the larger vision and opportunities for the Central City and includes a broad background and development of the Central City to help designers and developers understand the rich context of this unique place in our city.
Section 3 – The Central Core Design Guidelines are the new updated guidelines for the new Central Core Design Review District. It contains four chapters: Introduction, Framework, Public Realm Guidelines, and Private Realm Guidelines. The Central Core Design Review District has been reviewed by all City Commissions and has been taken to the City Council Law and Legislative Committee. The district will be formally adopted by Council in May along with the guidelines.
Section 4 – Sacramento Central City Neighborhood Design Guidelines. The guidelines adopted September 1999 will be inserted in this section.
Section 5 – Sacramento Railyards Design Guidelines. The guidelines adopted on December 11, 2007 will be inserted.
Section 6 – Richards Boulevard Area Plan. The guidelines adopted December 13, 1994 will be inserted in this section. This guidelines will be revised in 2010 under the ongoing River District Specific Plan process. The revised guidelines will carry forward similar format to Section 3.
