Sacramento Natural Gas Storage Facility
Project P07-111

Tentative Timeline

Mid 2008 California Public Utilities Commission Determination
Fall 2008 City of Sacramento Planning Commission Hearing
Mid 2009 Project Begins Operation

Sacramento Natural Gas Storage is proposing to build an underground natural gas storage facility in the South Sacramento community area. The underground storage portion of the facility (referred to as the “underground reservoir”) is located roughly 3,800 feet below the surface. The reservoir at one time contained natural gas that had been formed over time by natural processes. The natural gas was extracted by Union Oil in the 1970s and 1980s. The project proposes to inject natural gas into the same cavity, with an approximate capacity of 7.5 billion cubic feet of natural gas.

The “lateral limits” (i.e., edges) of the underground reservoir are:

  • Northern edge: Elder Creek Road
  • Southern edge: Florin Road
  • Western edge: 75th Street
  • Eastern edge: Union Pacific Railroad

The underground storage portion of the facility is located underneath approximately 700 residences, as well as 40 commercial and industrial properties.

On the Surface

There will be two structures built above ground to maintain this facility:

Wellhead Site
An injection and extraction well facility would be built on approximately 3.5 acres, which are located at the northeast corner of Junipero Street and Power Inn Road (6881 Power Inn Road).
Compressor Station
The compressor station would be located on approximately 4.0 acres on the grounds of the Army Depot (8300 Fruitridge Road).

Pipelines

The applicant proposes to construct a buried 16 inch interconnection pipeline between the wellhead and compressor station. The project also includes construction of connections to existing regional natural gas pipelines. The applicant would construct a buried 16 inch interconnection pipeline between the compressor site and the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) Line 700; and the Yolo County interconnection which would consist of a buried 12 inch interconnection pipeline between SMUD Line 700 and PG&E Line 172 and associated metering facilities.
