Railyards

About the Area

The Railyards Project Area is located just north of Downtown and south of the River District. It was adopted as a separate redevelopment project area in 2008. It once served as the western terminus of the 1860s Transcontinental Railroad. Today, the Railyards continues to house a major transportation
hub and will soon be home to a dynamic mixed-use, transit-oriented development.

The Sacramento Railyards will connect and complement downtown and the neighboring River District as a vibrant mixed use community and offering entertainment, retail, housing, office space, theaters, parks, hotels and museums. The Railyards Specific Plan, adopted in December 2007, describes a new vision for a 240-acre portion of the Railyards site, including:

  • Up to 2.4 million square feet of office uses
  • 12,000 residential units
  • 1.9 million square feet of retail, hotel, and other commercial uses
  • 29 acres of parks and open space

The City of Sacramento's Department of Transportation is embarking on an effort to bring forth the Sacramento Intermodal Transportation Facility. The facility will provide user-friendly connections between nearly all modes of transportation: a single location for bicycle, pedestrian, bus, light rail, taxi and train connections can be planned. The facility is also part of the revitalization of the 240-acre railyards redevelopment area in the heart of downtown Sacramento.

Railyards Project

The Railyards will transform the historic Union Pacific site into a dynamic, urban environment featuring a state of the art mass transit hub that will serve residents, workers and visitors.

The project will offer a vibrant atmosphere with entertainment, 1.3 million square feet of retail, restaurants, and mixed-use high-density housing; and 2.9 million square feet of office space, theaters, fine arts venues, parks, hotels, museums and historic buildings.
