Our Vision Our Mission

Letter From Penny

In our ongoing efforts to balance quality care for the animals and good customer service to the public, the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services will adjust our shelter hours. Effective February 27, the hours to the public will be Tuesday to Friday from 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm and Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.

We are adjusting staff schedules and the hours we are open to provide the maximum number of staff and sufficient time to clean and feed the animals before we open to the public. Currently, the work schedule for Animal Care Services inhibits our ability to complete the morning cleaning and be ready to service the public when we open. The staff is then in a position of having to cease caring for the animals (cleaning kennels, feeding and medicating animals) to assist the public with their search for their lost animal and their interest in adopting an animal and to take in owner surrender animals or stray animals.

The care and cleaning of the shelter animals then takes a back seat. The number one priority for the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services is to provide the best possible care for the shelter animals. By providing additional time for Animal Care staff, it will improve the quality of care for the animals, decrease stress, prevent the spread of disease, and provide the shelter animals a happier and healthier environment thus greater opportunities for adoption.

Effective March 27, Animal Care Services will open to receive animals through our Reception Center from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Providing additional hours that the public can bring an animal to the shelter will eliminate the flood of animals when the shelter opens and provide service to those finding a stray animal on the way to work. By adjusting the work schedule and the public hours, we will accomplish our goals of keeping the shelter animals healthy. We will monitor the impact of the changes and re-evaluate after 90 days.

Thank you for your support of the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services shelter animals.

Titanic

March 10th Update:
We anticipate having dog and cat food available on Thursday, March 11

In the spirit of giving, the City of Sacramento Animal Care Services is kicking off a pet food bank. Named after the shelter's resident cat, Titanic's Pantry will provide food and supplies to companion animals in our community. The shelter is requesting donations from individuals and businesses to keep this program on-going.

The goal of the food bank is to keep people and their pets together by providing food and supplies. The shelter strives to be a resource for individuals and families who are not able to afford food for their companion animals. It is preferred that the food bank recipient's pet(s) is altered, vaccinated, and licensed. For those pets that are not, the shelter will provide a list of resources to do so.

The pet food bank begins on Tuesday, November 24. We will distribute during shelter hours on Tuesday through Friday from 12:00 pm to 5:30 pm and Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. We are closed on Sunday, Monday, and holidays. Recipients are required to live in the city limits of Sacramento.
