What An Adoption Includes:

Spay Or Neuter
All animals must be spayed or neutered before they go home with an adopter*. The surgery is performed the next available business day at the shelter or at a contracted vet. The adopter picks up his/her altered animal in the afternoon before the shelter or the vet hospital closes.

Preventative Vaccinations
For dogs and puppies, they receive the Bordetella and DHPP vaccinations. For cats and kittens, they receive the FVRCP vaccination.

Rabies Vaccination
Rabies vaccinations are for dogs and cats over the age of 4 months. If a pet is under 4 months of age, then the adopter receives a free rabies vaccination coupon that may be redeemed at the shelter once the pet reaches the required age.

Heartworm Test
Heartworm tests are for dogs over the age of 6 months.

Leukemia / Aids Test
Leukemia (FELV) and AIDS (FIV) tests are for cats and kittens.

Collar/Leash And Cat Carrier
When an adopter comes to pick up his/her adopted animal, he/she will receive either a collar and a leash (for dogs) or a cardboard carrier (for cats).

One-Year License
A one-year license applies only for those who reside in the city limits of Sacramento. If an adopter lives outside the city limits and within the county of Sacramento, then he/she will need to license his/her pet with the County of Sacramento Animal Control and Regulations.

Microchipping All dogs and cats adopted from our shelter are microchipped prior to leasing them to their new home.

*Section 30503(a) and 31751.3 of the California Food and Agricultural Code prohibits the sale of any dog and cat that has not been spayed or neutered. Sacramento City Code Section 6.07.084(b) prohibits the sale of any dog or cat unless the animal was spayed or neutered prior to its impoundment or is spayed or neutered at the purchaser's expense prior to delivery of the animal to the purchaser.
