Foster Care Information
WHAT IS A FOSTER CARE PROVIDER?
Foster Care Providers are people who are interested in helping shelter
animals by providing care to an animal for a short period of time. Animals
that need fostering are kittens that are too young to be adopted, mother
cats with young kittens, cats with upper respiratory illnesses that need to
be medicated, puppies that are too young for adoption, mother dogs and their
pups and dogs with kennel cough who need to be medicated.
WHAT DO I DO WITH A FOSTER ANIMAL?
Foster Care Providers take animals into their homes for the time it
takes to complete their medication or bring them up to an adoptable age.
When they are well or old enough to be adopted, the animal(s) are returned
to the shelter for adoption.
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
If you have a love of animals and some experience with them, you can become
a foster Care Provider. Call our Foster Care Coordinator at 916-808-8166. You will receive a call and will be asked to attend
a Foster Care Workshop. Once you've attended this workshop and filled out
the application forms, you'll be called when an animal is ready for your home.
WHAT DO I DO WITH A FOSTER ANIMAL?
These workshops are provided for you to teach you how to take care of young
animals and animals with colds. You'll learn all kinds of things about animals
and their care. It is required that you attend on of these workshops prior
to fostering.
WHAT DOES THE SHELTER PROVIDE?
The City of Sacramento Animal Care Serves will provide cat litter, dog and/or
cat food, vaccinations, medications, and many other needed items. All you need
to provide are love, comfort, and good care.
