Creating a Sustainable City
City's Accomplishments & Green Goals

City’s Draft Sustainability Plan focuses on 9 areas:

Energy Independence
Goal: Reduce the use of fossil fuels and increase the availability and use of locally and regionally produced renewable energy

Climate Change
Goal: Implement a Citywide and regional Climate Action Plan.

Air Quality
Goal: Meet and maintain Air Quality Standards.

Material Resources
Goals: Reduce use of materials. Encourage the reuse and recycling of materials. Reduce the use of toxic materials.

Public Health and Nutrition
Goal: Improve the health of residents through access to a diverse mix of wellness activities and locally produced food.

Urban Design, Land Use, Green Buildings, and Transportation
Goals: Establish and continuously improve “green” building standards for both residential and commercial development-new and remodeled. Provide efficient and accessible public transit and transit supportive land uses. Provide an optimal array of transportation and housing choices for a balanced, healthy City.

Open Space and Quality Habitat
Goals: Provide accessible Parks and open spaces. Maintain and expand the urban forest. Preserve quality agricultural and critical habitat resources.

Water Resources and Flood Protection
Goals: Conserve the use and protect the sources of water. Work with the community to provide exceptional flood protection.

Public Involvement and Personal Responsibility
Goal: Support and empower public and personal sustainability campaigns and behaviors.


Sustainability Operating Principles for the City of Sacramento

• The City of Sacramento intends to conduct its businesses in a way that increases the sustainability of this and future generations.

• The City will continuously improve, and expand existing programs to meet the Goals and Targets of this Plan.

• The City will include fiscal responsibility, social equity, and environmental sustainability in its decision-making processes.

• The City will adopt a General Plan that contains key sustainability policies and practices, and recognizes direction provided by this Plan

• The City may use its jurisdiction over the built environment (land use, infrastructure, and building permits) when appropriate to improve the sustainability of the City.

• The City will be a leader in implementing local and regional programs to respond to the global issues identified in this Plan.

• The City will advocate for Sustainability efforts at the regional, state and federal level.
