Sustainable Sacramento

Creating a more Sustainable City

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is a broad term that generally means living within the means of what the earth can provide over the long-term. A sustainable society meets the need of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

All over the world, governments, organizations, and private citizens are looking for new ways to deal with the challenges that lie ahead. Cities can meet these challenges by shaping the built environment (including development patterns, building design, transportation and other infrastructure) and providing services such as water delivery and solid waste, in a way that protects the environment, is economically viable, and equitably distributed and/or applied.

Sustainability Master Plan

The Master Plan, adopted in 2007, estabilishes a road map for all city departments to integrate sustainability along 9 key focus areas into general city policies, procedures, operations while fostering ongoing collaboration across city government.

Sustainability Impementation Plan

This plan identified key initiatives that staff plans to implement annually to move the city toward the goals and targets identified in the Master Plan.

2030 General Plan

Adopted in March 2009, the Sustainability and General Plan promotes a more sustainable city over the net 30 years. The 2030 General Plan is the City of Sacramento's policy guide for the future. It sets policy guidelines for everything from the physical boundaries of the city to its economic growth and physical development. Think of it as a guide for future development and preservation of resources.
