MAJOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Played key role in securing passage of groundbreaking "Race to the Top" and Common Core Standards state legislation to improve low performing schools and empower parents
  • Selected as Founding Chair of the US Conference of Mayors' Public Schools Task Force and Co-Chair of US Secretary of Education Arne Duncan's Education Reform Task Force
  • Launched City-Schools Collaborative with regional superintendents to better align city services with district priorities
  • Launched Sacramento READS reading initiative to ensure all third graders are reading on grade level
  • Passed over a half-dozen education reform policy resolutions via the US Conference of Mayors, including policies to ensure effective teachers are in every classroom, parents are empowered to turn around failing schools, and high-performing public charter schools are supported and replicated
  • Hosted California Mayors Education Summit with mayors and superintendents from across California, featuring a roundtable discussion with Secretary Arne Duncan as part of his annual "Education Drives America" back-to-school bus tour
  • Launched STAND UP nonprofit to dramatically increase student achievement in Sacramento schools through policy advocacy and community engagement
  • Convened regular meetings and events attended by over 2,000 parents, educators, school administrators, and state legislators to discuss critical education reform policy and advocacy issues
  • Selected as first city in nation to pilot Any Given Child arts education program, providing arts enrichment education to thousands of students in Sacramento Unified and Twin Rivers school districts
  • Led community effort to bring nationally-acclaimed Teach for America and City Year programs to Sacramento

PRIORITIES

  • Build a portfolio of compelling schools and programs
  • Develop a "School Report Card" to provide parents and families better information on school performance
  • Improve the quality of school leaders and educators via programs like TFA, TNTP and NLNS
  • Increase third grade reading proficiency from 37% to 80% by 2020
  • Expand internship and work study opportunities
  • Expand the number of quality early childhood education programs
  • Increase support for arts & music education
