Accomplishments
- Keeping Police and Fire Departments Strong
- Over $17 million in federal and state stimulus dollars for law enforcement and community policing
- Fought to protect against fire station “brownouts” and cuts to police and fire personnel during annual budget processes
- Improved coordination between Sac PD and school districts to enhance communication and school safety
- New approach to gang violence
- Launched Gang Task force to prevent gang violence through school-based and job-training programs, supported by $20M in city and county funding
- 400 youth attended Gang Summits to combat youth and gang violence
- Engaged faith-based leaders in renewed efforts to provide mentoring and support to youth at risk for gang activity
- Restore Flood Protection
- Partnered with Congresswoman Matsui and others to secure three year extension of preferred flood insurance rates and $103 million in federal funding
- Launched and expanded Mayor’s Flood Task Force to include more flood experts, business, professional, and technical stakeholders from across the region
- Improving Emergency Infrastructure
- Co-authored national report on federal disaster response policy reforms as Vice Chair of US Conference of Mayors Stafford Act Reform Task Force
- Launched Sacramento Ready initiative to improve coordination and training across the region
- Secured $40,000 grant from California Volunteers to improve training for community and faith organizations on disaster resiliency
