History

The Neighborhood Services Department was established in 1993 in response to citizen concerns regarding customer service, coordination of city services, and notification of development projects.

The Department addressed citizen concerns by offering services that facilitated public involvement in city government and offering programs aimed at enhancing quality of life. Department services focused on neighborhood capacity building, code enforcement, and after-school enrichment programs.

Over time, the needs of the City grew. With growth, Code Enforcement became its own department and the youth enrichment program became an integral program of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Neighborhood Services continues to focus on customer service by helping neighborhoods address community problems, supporting neighborhood associations, involving residents in city government, and providing information and referrals to city services. Our commitment to connecting residents to one another and city government staff remains a top priority.

Here are a few accomplishments the Neighborhood Services Department achieved during the 2005-2006 fiscal year:

• Supported 128 neighborhood organizations
• Helped create seven new neighborhood associations
• Coordinated the City Management Academy (an award-winning program connecting residents and business people with government staff and one another)
• Partnered with the community, Mayor and City Council, and other City departments to revitalize neighborhoods through Neighborhood Watch, Rebuilding Together, National Night Out, and Neighborhood Response Teams
