District 6 Hot Spot Lights Up Sim Center

Neighborhood Services and nearly 100 neighborhood youth kicked off Councilmember Kevin McCarty’s Friday night D6 Hot Spot at the George Sim Community Center on November 4, 2011.

Instead of being dark, cold, and closed from 7 pm to midnight, the two year old Sim Center buzzed with youthful energy in the gym, game room, and movie room. Youth suggested a dance area be added for next Friday.

Councilmember McCarty partnered and fundraised with labor, business, nonprofits, churches, Neighborhood Services, and Parks and Recreation to offer Friday night Hot Spot.

Sacramento’s Youth Commission: “A Sweet Treat at the Midtown Trick-or-Treat”

Brandon James, Staff Assistant

Barely three weeks into the 2011-12 year, the Sacramento Youth Commission proudly demonstrated its commitment to Sacramento’s youth by taking on its first official event last Saturday at the Midtown Trick-or-Treat.

The ‘Youth Commissioners’ were all spirited and silly while helping out the Midtown Business Association with its annual event by providing a safe and entertaining environment for young children celebrating Halloween. The center of the day’s excitement was located in the parking lot of Relles Florist on 24th St and J St. Nearby, Sacramento’s Youth Commissioners could be seen chaperoning the arts and crafts table, registering Pooch Parade participants, and providing cool apple cider to the thirsty parents and their costume clad children. Some at the event even managed to get an event map or treat from the Youth Commissioners in disguise as a yellow sunflower or spotted cow.

With all the laughter and fun by the end of the day it was hard to tell the difference between the laughing children and the smiling Commissioners. The success of this year’s first event is a great taste of things to come as this year is expected to be the Sacramento Youth Commission’s best yet!

The next events are soon to follow so look forward to the Youth Commissioners making a difference in your local community soon.

2011-12 Sacramento Youth Commission Begins

Brandon James, Staff Assistant

This year’s new Sacramento Youth Commission will undoubtedly accomplish great things in the 2011-12 year.

While off to a relatively late start, our ‘Youth Commissioners’ have already made up for lost time by holding extra meetings, participating in Grant Union High School’s Peace Week Rally, and by helping out with the Midtown Trick-or-Treat. It’s interesting to note that only eight members have continued to serve again on the commission. These incumbent members will provide the Youth Commission with a solid foundation of experience and self motivation.

The newest commissioners’ service will bring fresh perspective and ambitious ideas. Their contribution will bring creative solutions to some of the Sacramento are youth’s most pressing concerns.

As the new Staff Assistant, I hope to continue the tradition of making Sacramento the most youth friendly city, and to make the Sacramento Youth Commission known city-wide as the leading organization representing the voice of Sacramento’s youth.

We meet the first Monday of every month at 6pm at Historic City Hall, 915 I Street, Sacramento CA.

I invite you to come and see what we have to offer.

2011 City Management Academy Huge Success!

On Tuesday, April 12, 2011 the graduating class of the 2011 City Management Academy was in attendance at City Council with family and friends in attendance.  This year’s class was the highest number of graduates on record with 28 graduates completing the 11 week course.  During the CMA, “students” engaged in conversation with top level managers allowing them a better understanding of city government.  While city staffers also gained a better understanding of community concerns and ideas.  With this partnership formed, we are better positioned to work together to assist in resolving issues throughout the City of Sacramento.

At the council session, a special presentation was given with comments provided by Bill Burgua – Class of 2003 along with co-valedictorians Craig Powell and Adolfo Mercado.  The evening was capped off with a wonderful dinner enjoyed by everyone.

Thank you Class of 2011 and our wonderful CMA Alumni members!  Without your desire and commitment to the City Management Academy, we couldn’t have done it!

City of Sacramento Employee Night at the Sacramento River Cats Opening Weekend!

On the opening weekend of the Sacramento River Cats 2011 Season, city employees with their families and friends enjoyed a night filled with FREE parking, $1 hot dogs and $1 ice cream.  Close to 800 tickets were sold at a great discounted price for City of Sacramento employees to enjoy the game.

The honorary first pitch was thrown out by Linda Tucker’s son as she was the winner of the employee first pitch contest.  The night started well for the River Cats as they tied up the score at the end of the 1st inning but the win ended up going to the Tacoma Rainiers after they made a late rally effort.  Friday’s final score Tacoma 3 – River Cats 1.  The River Cats did split the series with Tacoma 2 – 2.

I know my family truly enjoyed the night by spending it with fellow co-workers and the Sacramento River Cats.  Hope to see you at the game next time!

Neighborhood Services Brings Redistricting Awareness Citywide

What better way to reach neighborhoods across the city than by using Neighborhood Services (Community Partnership Meetings) and the City Management Academy for Redistricting Forums.

Redistricting is the process of redrawing district boundaries of elected officials to address changes in population, so elected officials represent approximately the same number of people. This process takes place every 10 years based on results of the nation’s census.

Redistricting has major implications for public policy, funding programs and services, and taking into account such factors as communities of interest, existing neighborhoods, and community boundaries.

Redistricting affects the whole city. Don’t wait to get involved. The process is focused. The timeline robust. Redistricting education and awareness are happening now. Census data and mapping tools will be released in April. Map proposals are due in May. Map review and comment is June, July, and August. The City Council will adopt new boundaries in September 2011.

Click on http://www.cityofsacramento.org/redistricting/ for the latest redistricting information.

Sacramento Youth Commission Joins the Santa Sam Celebration

Lyndsy Gholson, Staff Assistant

December 9th, 2010 marked the 16th Annual Santa Sam Celebration. The late Councilmember Sam Pannell started this holiday tradition providing children with an unforgettable Christmas experience. This tradition continues today with Councilmember Bonnie Pannell.  The Sam Pannell Community Center was filled with laughter, entertainment, great food, holiday songs and not to mention sheer excitement.

This year the Sacramento Youth Commission decided to get in on the action. Serving as leaders of Youth in the Sacramento Community, this celebration was certainly something they wanted to be a part of. The commissioners helped teachers with the students, decorating, handing out gifts, and proper helmet fittings for those who received bikes. With all the excitement in the atmosphere, it was hard not to join the children during Christmas caroling. Santa’s arrival set off an explosion of energy that was purely contagious for the commissioners. Not too long ago these Commissioners were in grade school making wish list themselves, so they understood how exciting it is around this holiday.  This celebration was ultimately for the students, but was truly rewarding to watch every child’s face light up when opening their gifts.

Neighborhood Services Wants You Ready, Are You?

Neighborhood Services kicked off the first of eight free disaster preparedness workshops on November 1. For a complete list of workshops in November, click on www.cityofsacramento.org and look in the ‘News’ section.

No one likes to think about the possibility of a disaster – flood or otherwise, but it is one of the most important things you can do to prepare for one. Do you have a plan for your family? What can you do as a first responder? Why is it important to be prepared? What can you do for your pet(s)?

The City County Office of Emergency Services, Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency, Utilities Department, Police, Fire, Animal Care, and Chief Service Officer provided valuable information on what can happen in a disaster and useful tips on how to be prepared. Written material in several languages was also available.

Mayor's Summer Reading Camp 2010

By Lyndsy Gholson, NSD Intern

The 2010 Mayor’s Summer Reading Camp kicked off without a hitch! This summer marks the 11th year of reading program focusing on kindergarten, first and second grade students, who needed additional help with their reading skills.

This year’s theme was “camping “set with mock camp fires and live turtles. Campers learned songs, raps, poems and dances all pertaining to camping.  The summer campers had the opportunity to become confident in reading a comprehension.

Guest readers Police Deputy Sheriff Brian Louie, the Fire Department’s John Burgess, our own Dr. Gregory Douglas, County Supervisor Elect Phil Serna, Sacramento County’s Cortez Quinn, Aero Jet’s Juanita Garcia, and Parks and Recreation’s Director Jim Combs, came and shared their favorite books. Seeing these positive role models of our community, show that they too love to read and set a great example for the campers.

The reading camp concluded with exciting games, arts and crafts and a reading camp Graduation ceremony. Upon graduation every camper received a backpack full of books and school supplies, along with a signed certificate of excellence from Sacramento’s Mayor, Kevin Johnson!

The Mayor’s Summer Reading Camp was made possible through generous donations from our local business and community. The Neighborhood Services would like to thank all the generous donations received to keep the Mayor’s Summer Reading Camp running for another year.

2010 Neighborhood Night In Funderland

By Darsey Varnedoe, NSD Intern

Friday July 9, 2010 was a perfect evening to come out and enjoy once again another wonderful event put on by your Neighborhood Services Department.

Neighborhood Services Department put on their annual “Neighborhood Night In Funderland” which has been going on since 2001.  With this unbearable heat wave sweeping through California, this night was nothing like the rest.  The temperature was at a cool rate that everyone could enjoy the festivies without worrying about the heat.  To top it off, the staff of your Neighborhood Services were passing out free waters.

If you were not at this event, then you really missed out.  More than 800 kids and parents were in attendance.  Not just the kids were having a blast, but the parents were having a delightful time. Several  youth groups were in attendance they included: Phoenix Park Youth Group, Roberts Family Development Center, and Aspen Park After School Group. By the time 7:30 p.m. came, we sold out of tickets. Yes sold out of 800 plus tickets!!

All in all it was a great night to come out and enjoy an evening with your Neighborhood Services Department. I would like to thank my fellow interns Austin, Vince, Elena, Lyndsy, and Angie, without you this event could not have been possible. Hope to see you there next year!

Planting 'Neighborhood' Seeds at Farmer's Market

The Farmer's Market at Cesar Chavez Plaza across from Historic City Hall buzzes with activity on Wednesdays. Not only can people get fresh fruit, produce, and flowers, but they can also get a bite to eat and pick up useful information about city services. The Neighborhood Service's booth had two staff in front of the booth, 2 people in the booth, and 2 interns assisting to handle the crowd. Who do I call? Where do I go? Can you help me with.....? Did you know....?  It's free, really.

Engaging people face to face makes such a big difference. It is so much easier to talk to people and make a connection, resolve an issue, and promote the benefits of neighborhood organizing. Be sure to look for Neighborhood Services again at the Farmer's Market in August.

Neighborhood Services made a lot of new friends talking to residents and handing out information bags.

Neighborhood Services Teams Up with Matt Cain Junior Giants Field Dedication

By Darsey Varnedoe, NSD Intern

You walk out onto the perfectly manicured baseball diamond with freshly chalked baselines.  The sun is shining brightly on your face and the announcer says your name as you come up to bat.  You take a few practice swings and look out onto the pitchers mound.  It’s San Francisco Giants ace pitcher Matt Cain.  Am I dreaming?  Am I at AT&T Park?

No you aren’t at AT&T Park but on Tuesday, June 15, 2010, Councilmember Kevin McCarty in partnership with the City of Sacramento, the Community Fund, the Good Tidings Foundation and Giants pitcher Matt Cain a dedication ceremony was held at the newly refurbished Matt Cain Junior Giants Field at the George Sim Community Center.  The field features new vinyl-coated fencing for the backstops and dugouts, upgraded irrigation system, fresh infield and outfield sod, improved drainage and a new backstop for tee-ball players.

More than 400 community members including students, teachers and chaperones from Elder Creek Elementary School joined the event featuring various member of the Giants organization.  Giants’ pitcher Matt Cain and owner Bill Neukom along with the team mascot Lou Seal were at this special dedication.  The 7th inning stretch rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” was enjoyed by everyone.

At the conclusion of the dedication ceremony, Matt Cain was available for photos and autographs.  Everyone in attendance received an autographed commemorative poster of the event and a Giants magazine featuring Matt Cain.  Neighborhood Services staff and interns were on point with the BBQ featuring hot dogs, chips and juice.  Before the end of the event cool popsicles were handed out as a treat for the walk back to school or travel home.

Neighborhood Services was delighted to be part of the team lead by Councilmember McCarty along with the Giants Community Fund Program and Matt Cain to keep youth running the bases and engaged in the Junior Giants program.  Thank you!

Hot Stuff At Shasta Park Day

Shasta Park near the new Valley Hi North Laguna Library sizzled with Sacred Fire (band), big fun (obstacle course, rock climbing wall), food, and hot neighborhood information on June 27th thanks to Councilmember Bonnie Pannell. Neighborhood Services talked to many new residents about city services and got several full pages of new contacts to follow up with about happenings in the neighborhood - e.g., neighborhood associations, free and low cost recreation activities, upcoming National Night Out, life jacket loan program, mosquito awareness, and much more.

NSD Meets & Greets at 19th Annual Pops in the Park Concert Series

How do you know when summer has arrived?  When Pops in the Park begins!  2010 marked the 19th annual Pops in the Park series hosted by Councilmember Steve Cohn.  Every Saturday in June hundreds of community members gather for the free concerts for an evening of music, socializing and family fun.  This year's line up included "Whiskey Dawn" at East Portal Park, "Because" at Glenn Hall Park, "Swing Masters" at Bertha Henschel Park and the "Q-Balls" at McKinley Park.

Proceeds from food and beverage sales go to fund community projects, such as construction new playgrounds in neighborhood parks, youth athletic scholarships, the M Street Plaza Fountain located at 48th and M Streets, and most recently funds have been used to extend hours at community swimming pools.

For Neighborhood Services, the concerts are a great opportunity to meet and greet neighbors, and let them know about Neighborhood Services. Neighborhood Services is a great resource for residents because we are knowledgeable about city services, problem solvers, and make it a point to be accessible in the field.

So next year when June rolls around, be sure to check out Pops in the Park and Neighborhood Services!

Summer Concert is Happening in South Sac

On Sunday, June 6th Councilmember Bonnie Pannell kicked off her Summer Concert Series. The concert took place at North Laguna Creek Park in South Sacramento and featured Capitol City Band. Over four hundred people showed up to hang out with fellow neighbors and take in the beautiful evening. Capitol City played a variety of tunes including some soul classics as well as contemporary tunes. The band kept the crowd singing and dancing for the entire evening.

The festivities included several mega- jump houses, rock climbing, carnival games, resource booths, and free hot dogs, chips and drinks for all. The entire event was free for the community, thanks to the sponsorship of Councilmember Bonnie Pannell. Of course, Neighborhood Services was on the scene connecting neighbors to resources and information and getting other residents “in the loop”.

A Day of Deals & Great Friends

The Alkali Mansion Flats and Boulevard Park Neighborhood Associations enjoyed the wonderful Saturday to host rummage sales in their community.  More than twenty members of the community and associations brought out a variety of trinkets to sell that day including toys, art work, clothing, dishes and much, much more.  Donations and sales of items provided the opportunity of proceeds to support the community garden in J. Neely Johnson Park or the neighborhood association themselves.  Congrats on a wonderful event!

Neighborhood Services Makes It Real

Have you heard of Antwone Fisher or “Freeway” Ricky Ross?  They are two inspirational men who overcame difficulties in their young lives.  Sacramento had the pleasure of hearing these two speak live and in person.  There was also time to ask questions and get autographs at the George Sim Community Center thanks to Neighborhood Services and Black Men Who Mean Business (BMWMB) for organizing this free event.  The hardships and struggles these two gentlemen spoke about seemed unreal to some, but in reality these events happen daily whether we know it or not.

The first speaker of the evening was Mr. Antwone Fisher.  Born inside a correctional facility, he was then sent to foster care where he experienced some sexual abuse.  After graduating from high school, he became emancipated and homeless.  He enlisted in the Navy as a gateway to a better life.  Fisher grew as a person and learned many new things about the world.  After the Navy, he went on to work for Sony Pictures as a security guard, producer, author, and screenwriter.  Fisher’s struggles show that anyone can come from anywhere and still go on to succeed in life.

Mr. Ricky Ross shared his experience with drug dealing.  Ross was one of the biggest drug dealers in America at the time.  He was not interested in anything other than making money and getting “high.”  It took him going to prison to make him reflect on his choices.  Ross taught himself to read in prison and got his sentence reduced due to an error in his case.  If it was not for him learning how to read, he would probably still be in prison.

These two stories portrays what goes on in America and what people do to better their lives even if it takes them going to prison or enlisting in the Military.  The morale is that there are always paths to enrich your life even if you can not see it at first.

Jazz in the Park - Council District 3
On Sunday, June 6th the annual Jazz in the Park concert for Council District 3 took place in Winn Park at 28th & P Streets. As in years past, the Neighborhood Advisory Group (NAG) Events Committee fundraised at the concert with a raffle, beer and wine garden and food vendors. Proceeds from the concert go directly back to the neighborhood associations involved in the fundraising efforts.

A great time was had by all ages! (And all species - see the picture below of a furry friend.) The Hucklebucks headlined the show and as in years past, they got the crowd moving with their bluesy-rock twang! The opening act, Exhale, a 3-piece band with members all under 18, rocked the park with their original sounds and covers from the Beatles, John Mayer, Matchbox Twenty, and many more. Free children's activities such as mask making and scratch art were provided by Friends of Grant Park.

A special thanks to Councilmember Cohn, Department of Parks and Recreation and the neighbors of the NAG Events Committee for a great community event!

Neighborhood Summit 2010:  A Huge Success!

On Friday, May 21st more than 300 residents, business owners and community partners participated at the 2nd Annual Neighborhood Summit 2010.  This annual event highlights the continued efforts made by the Neighborhood Services Department to provide opportunities for residents to communicate and develop partnerships between city staff, other residents, neighborhood associations and business owners throughout the city.

The day begun with an opening ceremony featuring keynote speakers Dr. Mitchel Adler of MindBody Intelligence and Mike McKeever, Executive Director of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG).  Throughout the one-day summit, workshops were provided by representatives from the public, private, and non-profit sectors which allowed the attendees an opportunity to learn more about innovative strategies that nurture healthy neighborhoods in and around Sacramento. Neighborhood blight, affordable housing, crime prevention, energy efficiency, disaster preparedness, and healthy communities were some of the featured workshop topics at this year’s summit.

This year’s summit provided our participants two separate resource areas in which to find new and exciting information.  The Sustainability resource area allowed everyone to learn tips on making your home energy efficient from SMUD while the Department of Utilities provided water conversation strategies.  Our Wellness resource area provided an opportunity to learn more about stress, nutrition, asthma related symptoms and much, much more including a free massage.

The day was concluded with a free raffle that featured prizes including various donations from Home Depot which included CFL bulbs, solar lawn lighting and a composting bin.  Other prizes provided a family pack of tickets to a River Cats game, local museum passes, special gift baskets and a 19” LCD plasma television, just to name a few.

The Neighborhood Services Department would like to thank our generous sponsorships from the Nehemiah Corporation, JB Management, U.C. Davis Campus Community Relations, and Sacramento Consolidated Charities.  See you next year for Neighborhood Summit 2011!

Dance Your Way to Good Heart Health Series 2

Fun!  That’s the word to describe the experience at Dancing Your Way to Good Heart Health Series 2!  Over 50 participants of all ages had loads of fun soul line dancing and riving up their hearts at the Pannell-Meadowview Community Center.  The day began with a blood pressure screening provided by the California North State College of Pharmacy students; the next activity was a healthy food demonstration by the Network for a Healthy California African American Campaign.  Participants sampled great tasting and nutritious fruit smoothies and veggies.  The third and final activity was soul line dancing with Tina B. and the Soul Line Dancers.  The soul line dancing was scheduled for one hour, but everyone was having such a great and fun time, Tina B and her Soul Line Dancers stayed an extra half an hour.  Loads of laughter and comments like, “can’t wait to do that again,” were heard as participants left the community center, rived up to tackle their Saturday.

NSD Organizes City's Earth Day

By Ijeoma Ononuju, NSD Intern

On Thursday, April 22, 2010 Earth Day was celebrated in Sacramento.  The Mayor & City Council, in partnership with the Neighborhood Services Department held its annual Earth Day Celebration at Cesar Chavez Park and City Hall Plaza. Earth Day celebrates the environment and empowers communities across the globe to embrace “GREEN” practices that protect and preserve the environment.

This year’s celebration was supported by more than 60 vendors, comprised of local and state municipalities, community organizations, local businesses, and residents from all over the greater Sacramento area.  From environmental sustainability to recycling, alternative fuels to solar technology, biking to planting and composting, this year’s celebration provided education, interaction, and activities for all ages to enjoy.

More than 1500 youth attended the celebration which featured a Kid’s Zone the provided interactive activities that taught lessons on how to be Earth friendly while having fun.  Activities from Home Depot taught planting skills, Star Eco wowed them with a reptile collection, and Power Play exercised their minds and muscles.  Entertainment included performances from Top Class Magic, Radio Disney, and Fall of “X”.  This event was truly memorable and fun for everyone.

This year’s celebration was truly unforgettable, so let’s remember Earth Day can be celebrated 365 days a year, not just one special day in April.   Thanks to all who attended and participated in the event.  See everyone again next year on April 22, 2011!

Planting Seeds for the Neighborhood

Community gardens like Neighborhood Services have a way of bringing people together.  The Tahoe Colonial Collaborative Heather Hutcheson, Tahoe Park Neighborhood Association (TPNA) President Bill Mottmans, Tahoe Elementary School Principal Kathryn Curry, SCUSD School Superintendent Jonathan Raymond, Department of Food and Agriculture David Pegos, and Congresswoman Doris Matsui, joined Councilmember Kevin McCarty on stage to officially open the Tahoe Park Community Garden.

The next time you are in the neighborhood on 8th Avenue between Tahoe School and Tahoe Park, check out the community garden next to the Tahoe Colonial Collaborative. The plots are going fast. The Family Youth Connection, Girl Scouts, long time resident Mas Hatano, and TPNA have already gotten their hands in the dirt planting their bounty.

Eggs and NSD for Breakfast

City sponsored egg hunts took place the last two weekends. The kids wanted Easter eggs and games. The parents wanted information. The Neighborhood Services Department represented with ears on as far north as Johnston Park, as far south as North Laguna Creek Park, and in between (e.g., Southside Park, William Land Park). Staff and interns provided information, answered questions, and helped resolve complaints. The signature NSD info bags were picked up as quickly as the eggs. Let us know the next time you want to do breakfast.

Gardening Workshops are a Growing Success!

Did you know that the Neighborhood Services Department hosted Gardening Workshops?  Our workshops began in late February and just concluded on Saturday, March 20, 2010.  The Gardening Workshops included such topics as; it begins with soil, vegetables and other edibles, pest management, composting, water conservation, gardening codes and restrictions.  The Gardening Workshops attracted over 150 participants who were able to ask questions specific to their yards and gardens and at several locations they were able to do some “hands on” planting with Home Depot.

To make these Gardening Workshops a success the Neighborhood Services Department partnered with the Code Enforcement Department, the Department of Utilities, Department of Parks and Recreation and Home Depot to provide presentations at the Gardening Workshops.  Home Depot was generous and gave away several composters to our gardeners, while the Department of Utilities gave water conserving shower heads and spray hose nozzles to all our gardening workshop participants.

Neighborhood Services interns along with Home Depot provided activities and “hands on” planting opportunities for children who attended the workshops with their parents.  The activities included; painting, drawing, reading and planning flowers.

After hosting these Gardening Workshops, the Neighborhood Services Department is looking forward to seeing “green” throughout our neighborhoods and hopefully sampling some of the great vegetables that have been “home grown.”

Count on Neighborhood Services and the 2010 Census

Heavy early morning rain did not dampen anyone's spirits on Saturday, February 27th.  The 2010 Complete Count Snow Day at Southside Park moved the rain and clouds for hundreds of families to get important information on the census and other free programs and services. Food and fun filled activities topped off the event.

Neighborhood Services and the Census are natural partners. A complete count (completed questionnaires) for Sacramento is critical to funding, services, and elected representation. Neighborhood Services represented with 2 staff and 4 interns (2 of which are bilingual in Hmong and Spanish) to engage a constant flow of residents attending the event.

Sacramento Black Expo 2010 – Great Weekend!

In celebration of Black History Month the City of Sacramento participated as an exhibitor at the Black Expo 2010.  The Neighborhood Services Department coordinated the City of Sacramento exhibit with the Police, Fire, Economic Development and the Utilities Departments as well as the Office of Youth Development.  The Black Expo hosted over 140 exhibitors in 13 pavilions, with a focus of being “Green Friendly”.  Attendance for the 3-day event is estimated to be over 40,000 people.

The Police Department recruited potential police officers, Fire provided information, while Economic Development spoke to small business owners and the Department of Utilities concentrated on the need for water conservation.

The Neighborhood Services staff answered questions, provided information packets, did “on the spot” problem solving and gave away great prizes as participants took a chance at our “wheel of fortune.”  Neighborhood Services had a great weekend and we are looking forward to Black Expo 2011.

Director’s Mobile Office Hours a Huge Success!

Reaching neighbors far and wide is what Neighborhood Services is all about!  And, how do we reach our neighbors?  One of the ways is with the Director’s Mobile Office Hours.  The Director of Neighborhood Services, our very own Vincene Jones is out in the community to personally help answer questions, listen to complaints, and provide information that you or any of your neighbors may need to continue making your neighborhood safe and healthy.

We kicked off the Director’s Mobile Office Hours early Friday morning, February 5, 2010 at Nugget Market on Florin Road and the Bel Air Market on Rush River Drive with radio station V101.1 broadcasting live from our location and Trent Sunahara, Field Representative from Congresswoman’s Matsui’s Office.  Neighborhood Services answered questions, listened to complaints and passed out over 120 packets of information at both locations.  The Director’s Mobile Office Hours was a huge success and will continue through the months of February and March.  We hope to see you at the Director’s Mobile Office Hours!

Sant Sam Rides Again

It was quite a while back when the idea germinated. The late Councilmember Samuel C. Pannell decided to reach out to the underprivileged children in his council district and to provide a memorable Christmas experience for them. The event was named “Santa Sam.” Fifteen years later, the annual Santa Sam celebration continues under the leadership of Councilmember Bonnie Pannell and a host of community partners, private sponsors and city staff.

Each year fourteen elementary schools within the district participate. School staff is asked to identify the neediest students in the 5th or 6th grades.  Those students then submit a wish list to Santa Sam. Neighborhood Services staff work closely with the Councilmember in providing logistical and operational support, gathering volunteers and serving as liaison to the schools. Volunteers participate in a shopping day, when they are given the wish lists of the kids and can spend up to $75 for each child. On the second Thursday in December the students, volunteers, sponsors, and staff gather at the Pannell Meadowview Community Center for a fabulous feast and celebration. This includes a magic show, singing, a ventriloquist, a special turkey dinner with all the trimmings, dessert, and of course the appearance of Santa Claus (who mysteriously looked just like Doug Houston from the Solid Waste division). The culmination is about 140 elementary students glowing with the joy of happiness.

Neighborhood Services Delivers Thanksgiving Food Baskets

Since 2005, Sacramento’s Mayor and Council Members, along with the Neighborhood Services Department, have been “paying it forward” in the Sacramento community.  On Friday, November 20, 2009, twenty-five (25) families received a Thanksgiving turkey with all the trimmings, courtesy of the Mayor, Council Members, City of Sacramento employees along with the Sacramento Metro Chamber, Siemens Industry Inc, Building Technology, and First Fridays of Sacramento.

The non-perishable food drive began on Wednesday, October 14 and concluded a month later on Monday, November 18, 2009.  Over 6,000 canned food items were collected at a variety of locations throughout the City of Sacramento, including; Sacramento City Hall, Sacramento’s public Safety Building, the Communications Center, 300 Richards, seven Community Centers, and the Sacramento Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

As the Neighborhood Services staff delivered the Thanksgiving turkeys and baskets, they met families who were in great need and extremely grateful for the assistance during this holiday season.  Staff reported that the faces of the families expressed deep gratitude and that several children shed tears at receiving the holiday baskets.  After the Thanksgiving Baskets were delivered, the remaining canned food items were donated to the Salvation Army to assist additional families.

The Neighborhood Services Department would like to thank the Mayor, Council Members, city staff, the Sacramento Metro Chamber, Siemens Industry Inc, Building Technology, First Fridays of Sacramento, and Sacramento neighbors for your generous donations to our 5th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.

Twin River CFL Exchange

On Saturday, August 22nd, Neighborhood Services teamed up with SMUD and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA) for a lightbulb exchange at the Twin Rivers public housing complex at 12th and Eliza Streets.

To promote energy efficiency, SMUD provided compact flourescent lightbulbs (CFLs) in exchange for the less efficient incandescent bulbs to all residents in the Twin Rivers community who wished to participate. With the help of Neighborhood Services, over 15 volunteers went door-to-door to exchange lightbulbs and to provide information about energy efficiency. Volunteers were given a brief presentation regarding energy efficiency to share information with residents (see picture below). After the door-to-door walk, SMUD and SHRA staff provided a free BBQ lunch for residents and volunteers.

For more information about CFLs and how they save both energy and money, visit SMUD's website at http://www.smud.org/en/rebates/compact-fluorescent-bulbs/pages/index.aspx and find retailers who offer a low price on CFLs.

Meadowview Neighborhood Park Day is a Hit!

As the summer comes to a close, Councilmember Bonnie Pannell concluded her rounds of neighborhood park days with a backpack giveaway at Meadowview Park. Kids played in the playground and jump house and enjoyed games, free hot dogs, chips and drinks. The adults hung out in their lawn chairs and were entertained by live musical performances. To top it off all the neighborhood kids received free backpacks to help start the school year on the right foot.

Several City Departments hosted resource tables including Police, Solid Waste, Code Enforcement, Sacramento Library and Neighborhood Services. A representative from each department made a brief presentation informing residents of current information related to city services and programs. Councilmember Pannell has sponsored eight other park days during this summer in different neighborhoods throughout the district. All the food and activities were free and the events provided residents a perfect opportunity to get engaged in various ways. There is no doubt that the neighborhood park days are the place to be!

2009 Mayor’s Summer Reading Camp

From August 10 to August 21, the Neighborhood Services Department managed the 2009 Mayor’s Summer Reading Camp.

The Reading Camp was a huge success at all five sites.  The Camp helped advance children’s reading skills and prepared the children for the upcoming school year.  During the camp, students who struggled with reading received aid to increase their level of reading and comprehension.  There were many fun activities for the students from arts and crafts to mathematics. In the end, 100 students walked away with a backpack full of goodies and most importantly the basic fundamentals of reading.

The sites were at Phoenix Park Community Center, Colonial Heights Library, Boys and Girls Club, Pannell-Meadowview Center, and Lemon Hill.

Back 2 School Community Picnic

Summer vacation is almost over and time has come to start preparing to go back to school.  This past Saturday the Neighborhood Services Department partnered with Vice Mayor Hammond, the La Familia Counseling Center, and the North Franklin District Business Association to bring the City Farms community a day filled with fun and excitement.  There were carnival games, a jumphouse, Mimo the Clown, a Magic Show and a BBQ lunch for everyone.  Resource tables provided a wide array of information including resources from the US Census 2010, the La Familia Counseling Center and your very own Neighborhood Services Department.  At the end of the day more than 200 backpacks filled with a variety of school supplies were distributed to the youth attending the event.

Survey Says...

After receiving over 200 surveys over the course of three special events during the summer, City residents have spoken clearly: the Neighborhood Services Department is doing a great job performing its duties.

Participants indicated the primary services provided by the department - connecting residents with information, with resources, facilitating resolutions, promoting involvement, and developing partnerships - are very important, and that they are very satisfied with the department's efforts to carry out those duties. Participants' average opinion held about the department was also very good.

In all, it is evident the department should continue providing their primary services and continue its activity in the various communities of Sacramento.

Open House a Success

In case you missed the Open House on July 23, 2009, it was a roaring success. Over 210 residents, business leaders, community leaders attended. An opportunity meet the newest collaboration with our department was the American Heart Association, who gave out information regarding stroke prevention and overall good heart health. People were also able to cool down with root beer floats.

Ceremony for the new Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library

The "Topping Out" Ceremony for the new Robbie Waters Pocket-Greenhaven Library was a very memorable event. This informal event marked the placement of the final steel beam in the steel superstructure of the new library, which will serve the Greenhaven-Pocket area. "Topping Out" reflects a long history of significance in the construction industry and signals a milestone in the construction sequence. Many of the attendees were encouraged to sign the final steel beam before it was lifted by the construction crane to it's final destination. The library is due to open in mid 2010. It will be 15,000-square-foot in size and slated for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification. The library branch will feature a 100-seat community room, teen room, two group study rooms, preschooler ready-to-read room, quiet reading room, and more than 50,000 books and digital materials. The library is a joint-use facility with the Sacramento City Unified School District’s School of Engineering and Sciences, City of Sacramento’s Parks and Recreation Department, and the Sacramento Public Library. Neighborhood Services provided the support for refreshments at the event.

Name Change for NSD Area Meetings - "Community Partnership"

As you may be aware, Neighborhood Services holds meetings in your area to facilitate broad communication between the City and the community on issues, policies and priorities. These meetings, formerly known as Area Leadership, are now the bi-monthly Community Partnership meetings.

Why the name change, you ask? Neighborhood Services is committed to being the bridge between the community and City government. A partnership between community members (including those who are members of a neighborhood association and those who are not) and the City is essential to keeping neighborhoods strong. Neighborhood Services is constantly looking to get more neighbors involved, hence the more inclusive name change.

Click here to see the calendar for all meetings in 2009.

Hope to see you there. Be sure to tell your neighbors and bring a friend
