Parks Volunteer Program

The Department of Parks and Recreation’s Parks Volunteer Program recruits volunteers to help with various stewardship activities in city parks, trails, and natural areas. Activities vary by season.  Training and tools are provided and no prior experience is needed, only the desire to help. Volunteer activities are available in all of Sacramento’s neighborhoods.  Many of the volunteer activities are great for large groups, families, and youth groups with adult supervisors. One-day or short-term volunteer activities are also available.

Spring is right around the corner.  The Department is already gearing up for “14 Miles of Service” on Saturday, April 19, 2008.  "14 Miles of Service" is an annual preservation and beautification project along the Sacramento Northern Bike Trail. The activities planned for that day include planting and mulching young trees, graffiti and invasive plant removal, pruning roses, and litter pickup.

The "14 Miles of Service" beautification project was created to celebrate Global Youth Service Day and Earth Day.

Global Youth Service Day (GYSD) is the largest service event in the world, mobilizing millions of children, teens, and young adults who work together to address the needs of local communities.  GYSD also embarks youth on a life-long path of service and civic engagement.  In addition, GYSD helps to educate the public, media, and elected officials about the many ways youth can serve their community.

Earth Day began in 1970 when consumers began to take action to protect the environment.  The movement now encompasses more than 13,000 organizations in 174 countries.

The Parks Volunteer Program is always looking for new volunteers.  If you would like more information about the program, please contact Julie Mier at (916) 808-2285.
