Sacramento START
“Where After School Counts!”

Sacramento START is a public/private collaboration that is working to build the capacity of children to succeed academically and socially while reconnecting families and neighborhoods to local schools.

Sacramento START transforms the after school hours into a fun, safe, and productive experience at 63 elementary schools that serve as Sacramento START sites.  At each one of these sites, dedicated staff work to provide children the knowledge and skills they will need to become productive adults.

Sacramento START believes that children should be given every opportunity to become successful adults.  Sacramento START fosters an enthusiasm for learning by engaging children in fun, literacy-focused activities in a safe and caring environment.

Sacramento START is offered at many local school districts: Sacramento Unified School District, Elk Grove Unified School District, Natomas Unified School District, North Sacramento School District, Del Paso Heights School District, Robla School District, and Rio Linda Union School District.  Because Sacramento START expands the school day, it serves as a vital partner for local school districts that wish to improve their students’ academic and social competencies.

Sacramento START sites are open Monday through Friday, after school until 6:00 p.m.  Sacramento START’s daily activity categories include Academic Support, Enrichment, and Sports and Recreation.  Sacramento START also incorporates health and nutrition into its programs through an AmeriCorps grant.  Additionally, AmeriCorps members serve some of their service hours at Sacramento START sites.

Examples of Sacramento START’s program components include:

  • Homework Assistance
  • Journal Writing
  • KidzLit and Kidzmath
  • Sports Stacking
  • Dodge Ball
  • Tennis
  • Flag Football
  • Track and Field
  • Softball
  • Science
  • Art
  • Music
  • Dance
  • Drama
  • Cooking/Baking

All of these activities impart valuable skills that children can use when dealing with future challenges.

Sacramento START places a high priority on providing its staff with the skills they need to effectively address children’s needs.  Each year, its staff participate in more than 40 hours of workshops and trainings.  These workshops and trainings guarantee that Sacramento START will continue to be a positive force in children’s lives.
