Urban Forest Services

The City of Sacramento has a long and proud history as the “City of Trees”. Sacramento’s urban forest is estimated to include approximately 1.6 million trees. Approximately 120,000 trees are estimated to be publicly owned. Urban Forest Services is tasked with management of the City’s public urban forest.  Improved property values, energy conservation, air quality and community pride are all benefits of a healthy and well managed forest. Historically, Sacramento’s political leaders and citizenry have supported trees and tree plantings, passing tree planting ordinances as early as 1853, only four years after the town was founded by John Sutter.

Urban Forest Services is made up of the following sections:

  • Arborists: Arborists are tasked with planning, inspections, assessments, and outreach and education efforts regarding the Urban Forest Services programs.
  • Tree Maintenance: Tree Maintenance crews are tasked with tree planting, young tree maintenance, disease suppression, and pesticide application.
  • Tree Pruning and Removal:  Pruning crews are tasked tree pruning and removal services.
  • Customer Service: All service request and requests for information are coordinated through the Urban Forest Services Customer Service line at (916) 808-6345.
  • Administration: Tasks include management of the budget, report and grant writing, procurement of services and supplies, and administration of City of Sacramento personnel policies.

Programs/Services

Urban Forest Services is responsible for the health, propagation, and maintenance of the City of Sacramento’s public urban forest (street and parks trees).  Residents can contact Urban Forest Service Customer Service at (916) 808-6345, with all service request, questions, and to report problems with trees.  The following services are provided by Urban Forest Services to the City of Sacramento and its residents.

  • Reforestation:  In order to maintain the urban forest, Urban Forest Services plants new trees each year.  Reforestation efforts involve staff and volunteers alike.  An important partner in this effort is the Sacramento Tree Foundation and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.  Residents can contact the City or the Sacramento Tree Foundation for tree plantings on their property.
  • Tree Pruning and Removal Services:  City crews supplemented by contract crews provide routine maintenance to the urban forest and respond to service requests from residents.  Urban Forest Service only provides tree pruning and removals on City trees.
  • Inspections: Inspections are provided on public trees and privately owned heritage trees, including root inspections in conjunction with sidewalk repair.
  • Storm and emergency services:  Urban Forest Services staff responds in storms and other emergencies to clear roadways and abate hazardous situations.  Residents should contact Urban Forest Services regarding trees blocking City streets.
  • Outreach and Education:  Staff arborists in partnership with the Sacramento Tree Foundation provide information regarding tree planting, tree pruning, tree health (diseases and pests), and tree growth and development.
