MEDIA ADVISORY ANNOUNCEMENT

New Trees Dedication Event
City Replaces Hazardous English Elm Trees with
New Disease Resistent Trees
1:30 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2002,
Cesar Chavez Plaza Park, 9th and I Streets

Sacramento California, November 21, 2002 – Several English Elm trees were removed earlier this year from Cesar Chavez Plaza Park in downtown Sacramento. Today at 1:30 p.m. members of the City Council, lead by City Councilmember Ray Tretheway, will dedicate six new trees.

To preserve and remember the beauty of these trees Ken Ackerman, executive director of Saw America, milled some of the removed trees’ lumber into benches, signs and other innovative uses. Also, there will be flags placed on a removed tree stump ring, stating what historical events occurred that particular year of the tree ring. A permanent monument is being prepared and its conceptual design will be shown to the public at the dedication ceremony.

The dedication ceremony will occur at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, November 21, 2002, at the corner of 9th and I Streets in downtown Sacramento. City Councilmember Ray Tretheway; Michael Ault, Executive Director of the Downtown Sacramento Partnership; and Martin Fitch, City Trees Superintendent, will address the audience.
