C.K. McClatchy High School Teen Center Opens Doors to Students

Grand Opening and Dedication Ceremony, Monday, December 16, 2002,
4 p.m., C.K. McClatchy High School, 3066 Freeport Blvd.

Sacramento, California, December 16, 2002 – Final preparations are being made for the grand opening and dedication ceremony of the new C.K. McClatchy High School Teen Center. The construction of the C.K. McClatchy High School Academic and Learning Support Collaborative and Department of Parks and Recreation Leisure Access Teen Program “Teen Center” is funded through the Community and School Partnership Program. In all, the City Council approved funding of more than $1.5 million for this and the other building projects in collaboration with the City Unified School District and other school districts in Sacramento. The City’s purpose for doing this is to meet neighborhood and community needs for public facilities by improving, using or building on neighborhood school sites.

“This partnership between the City of Sacramento, Sacramento City Unified School District and the community represents a project that has been in the works for more than 4–years,” said City Councilmember Jimmie Yee. “It should be noted that The Community and School Partnership Program funded this worthy effort.”

The Teen Center is under the umbrella of the C.K. McClatchy Academic and Learning Support Collaborative. The Collaborative is comprised of students, parents, school staff, and community partners. The Teen Center is one "key strategy" of the collaborative. Two primary collaborative programs based in the Teen Center are the City of Sacramento's Access Leisure Teen Program and People Reaching Out's mentoring program - "Mentors Reaching Out." The California HealthCare Foundation has been pivotal in providing grant funding over the past three years in regards to many of the collaborative efforts.

News media representatives are asked to park news vehicles at either the south or north parking lots. The Teen Center is located at the rear of the school campus. Signage will direct you to the Teen Center. For further information, please contact Ralph Pettingell, Recreation Manager at (916) 277-6173; or Ed Manansala, Teen Center Director at (916) 264-4661.
