Bill C. Bean, Jr. Memorial Park Dedication
Slain Police Officer’s Family to Dedicate New Park
Saturday, August 16, 2003, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 7334 17th Avenue
(Dedication at 11:30 a.m.)

Sacramento, California, August 14, 2003 – Hundreds of family, friends, neighbors and law enforcement representatives from far and near will gather this Saturday morning to dedicate the Bill C. Bean, Jr. Memorial Park, in memory of the slain Sacramento Police officer killed in the line of duty on February 9, 1999. Officer Bean lived as a young boy in the Colonial Manor neighborhood. Members of his family still reside in the neighborhood.

“Officer Bean was slain while serving and protecting our community,” said Vice Mayor Dave Jones. “The park is a lasting tribute to Officer Bean and his dedication to serving others, especially young people and children.”

In addition, the opening of this 4.3-acre park fulfills a commitment made to the Colonial Manor neighborhood many years ago, when land was first set aside for a neighborhood park. For decades the site stood undeveloped, a weedy blight on the neighborhood. Working with neighbors and the Colonial Manor Neighborhood Association, the Department of Parks and Recreation developed a park plan and the City obtained funding from the State of California and the City of Sacramento.
