City’s First Water Spray Feature to Open at Gardenland Park

Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, June 21, 2003, 11 a.m.
Gardenland Park, 3010 Bowman Avenue

Sacramento, California, May 21, 2003 – For the first time ever the City of Sacramento will have a unique water spray feature located at Gardenland Park. The size of the water spray feature play area is 968 square feet. Seatwalls along the perimeter of the water spray area with shade trees have been built for parent supervision while children are utilizing the water spray feature.

A grand opening and celebration of this unique and first-of-a-kind park feature is planned for Saturday, June 21, 2003 beginning at 11 a.m. Councilmember Ray Tretheway, Gardenland/Northgate Community Association and the Department of Parks and Recreation will host the community event. In addition to the water spray feature, neighborhood residents will enjoy a complimentary picnic meal, activities for the children, and fun for the entire family.

“We’re extremely excited about the opening of the water spray feature at Gardenland Park,” said Councilmember Tretheway. “This is something that has never been seen in the City, and it’s possible that other water spray features could be built at other key parks around the City. Gardenland is the first and the community is excited that it’s here.”

The entire water spray feature system can be turned on by the use of the bollard activator. The bollard activator is placed at the entrance of the water spray feature. Children can turn on the system by touching the sensor panel on the bollard activator to switch the entire water spray feature system to start.

This water spray feature is designed to hold a maximum of 36 to 60 children. This water spray feature consists of 12 in-ground spray nozzles. All the spray nozzles are built below grade to eliminate any above ground tripping hazards.

The spray nozzles are programmed to shoot out water at different time intervals. The controller panel has the capacity to hold 20 different nozzle-spraying sequences, which increases the non-predictability of the spray feature system by keeping the children guessing on which spray nozzles will be activated next.

No standing water will be on the ground while the water spray feature system is turned on. A drainage system has been built to carry away and re-circulate the water from the spray feature. Adjacent to the water spray feature is a plaza with shade trees and additional seating benches.
