City of Sacramento Receives $3 Million Grant
Oak Park Community Center to Undergo Major Expansion
Sacramento, California, November 9, 2004 -
Mayor Heather Fargo will announce at tonight's City Council meeting that
the State of California has awarded the City of Sacramento a $3 million
competitive grant from the State of California's Proposition 40 Urban Parks
Act Program Grant. The $3 million grant, coupled with funds from the City
of Sacramento, will be used for an extensive expansion of the Oak Park Community
Center, including a gymnasium/multipurpose building.
"The Oak Park Community Center
is the center piece of the Oak Park neighborhood and is a vital source
of recreational and community services that cannot be found elsewhere
in the surrounding area," said Mayor Heather Fargo.
The new facility, at 9,400 square
feet, will provide a much-needed venue for programs, recreation, community
meeting space and social gatherings. The project includes the relocation
of an existing outdoor basketball court. An additional outdoor basketball
court will be added to the community center grounds.
"Surveys of residents and center
users revealed that the surrounding community is in significant need of
a building for indoor recreational activities, and large social and community
events, said Mayor Heather Fargo. "In addition, the Oak Park community
is in need of a venue for expansion of programs, recreational athletics,
and large social gatherings. We are delighted and grateful that the State
of California has awarded this important grant to the City."
