Beat the Heat this Summer with Recreation
City offers programs and tips to stay cool
Sacramento, California, July 2, 2001
- The Department of Parks and Recreation, along with other City departments
has implemented Beat the Heat, a summer program designed to help the young
and old during the energy crisis.
When the temperature reaches 95 degrees or above, all
large pools (except Kennedy High School and all wading pools) operated
by the Department of Parks and recreation will remain open extended hours
in the evening. In addition, during hot weather periods all community
centers operated by the Department of Parks and Recreation will provide
cooling recreational activities.
Hot weather places our elderly neighbors in great danger
of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Unfortunately, the current energy
crisis and skyrocketing utility bills are making matters worse, forcing
many to make dangerous choices about how to spend their limited resources.
These choices can have tragic consequences for old and frail members of
our community.
That's why the City's Human Services section of the Department
of Parks and Recreation is working jointly with the County of Sacramento
to offer helpful information and tips through the Caring Neighborhoods
Program to caregivers, friends, neighbors and family members of older
adults living on their own. For more information and to receive your free
