50+ Wellness is a resource for information on who offers what where in the greater Sacramento area to promote health and vitality for people over age 50. 50+ Wellness publishes a quarterly newsletter listing exercise classes, health education workshops, special events, and ongoing programs offered by organizations in the community to older adults. Please call 808-1593 if you would like to receive a copy or be put on our mailing list to receive this free publication, or for further information about the 50+ Wellness Program.

Exercise Classes and Programs

If you are new to exercise, or have been out of it for some time or just want to exercise with people your own age, consider the following 50+ Wellness Exercise Classes and programs.

  • Balance & Strengthening - M/W, 10:30 am, S Natomas Community Center, 2921 Truxel Rd. Specific balance exercises combined with weight training to improve overall strength and balance. $20 for 10 sessions. 808-1571.

  • Chair Yoga Mondays, 11 am to noon. East Portal Clubhouse, Rodeo Way at L Street, East Sacramento. Yoga helps maintain or improve flexibility, balance, and mobility while improving coordination and strength. Recommend for anyone, at any age dealing with physical challenges, whether it's from injury, disease, illness, age or weight. $32 for 4 sessions. Register and pay at Coloma Community Center, 4623 T Street, or via the internet at www.parksandreconline.cityofsacramento.org. 916-808-1593.

  • Chi Gong for Special Populations - Tuesdays 6:30--8:30 pm at Evelyn Moore Community Center at 1402 Dickson Street. Practice the ancient art of Chi Gong and benefit from a group healing session. Free. 808-1593.

  • Fit over Fifty - M/W/F 10:30 am at Pannell Meadowview Community Center 2450 Meadowview Road. Includes stretching and strengthening exercises. $20 for 10 sessions. 808-6680

  • Head to Toe Fitness - M/W/F, 9:45-10:45am, Belle Cooledge Com.Center, 5699 S. Land Park Drive. The all-in-one-class! Feel fit and energized with a blend of exercise, tai chi, meditation, group hugs, games, songs and laughter.$20 for 10 sessions. 808-1593.

  • Movement with Music –Fridays, 10:30 am, South Natomas Community Center, 2921 Truxel Rd. Dance in your chair or on your feet! This class is heart and muscle friendly while being fun! $12 for 4 sessions. 808-1593.

  • Neighborhood Walk - Are you interested in walking in your neighborhood but don’t want to walk alone? Join Neighborhood Walk! Currently there are active walk groups in the City Cemetery in Downtown Sacramento, Land Park in the South Land Park area, Garcia Bend in Pocket, North Highlands in the north area, Oki Park in the College Glen area, Pannell Meadowview in the South Sacramento area, South Natomas at the South Natomas Community Center and at Tahoe Park. Call 808-1593 for group times and meeting days or if you would like to discuss starting a walking group in your own neighborhood.

  • Raja Yoga Mondays 12:30 to 2 pm. East Portal Clubhouse, Rodeo Way at L Street, East Sacramento. Improve your balance and flexibility. Learn to relax and find your true self through meditation. Each session incorporates the study of yoga philosophy, gentle stretching, deep breathing, yoga postures in combination with deep relaxation and introspective meditation. Students must bring own mat and towel. $32 for 4 sessions. Register and pay at Coloma Community Center, 4623 T Street, via the internet at www.parksandreconline.cityofsacramento.org. 916-808-1593.

  • Stretch N’ Flex - Tuesday and Thursday, 8 am. Belle Cooledge Com.Center, 5699 S. Land Park Drive. Stretch and flex your way to better health. FREE! 808-1953.

  • Stretching & Strengthening Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:45 to 9:45 am or 10 to 11 am. East Portal Clubhouse, Rodeo Way at L Street, East Sacramento. Improve overall flexibility and strength. This class focuses on proper body mechanics, posture and balance, with a relaxation phase at the end of the class. All fitness levels welcome! $55 per month. Register and pay at Coloma Community Center, 4623 T Street, or via the internet at www.parksandreconline.cityofsacramento.org. 916-808-1593.

Sports for Life! Series announced


The 50+ Wellness Program is pleased to announce its 2008 Sports for Life! Series Tournament schedule. Offering four sports in 2008, we hope to provide many of Sacramento's 50+ athletes with an opportunity to continuing pursuing the sports they love.
April 26th & 27th Soccer Tournament (Cherry Island Soccer Complex)
May 10th Archery Tournament (Discovery Park)
September 27, 2008 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, Hotshot and Free Throw Event (Leonardo Di Vinci School)

A Walk in the Park

Want to experience a City park in a whole new way? A new pilot project, A Walk in the Park provides walking directions, distance and points of interest to make your walking experience in City parks more enjoyable!

The initial Walk in the Park series provides information for the following walkable parks: Southside Park Downtown Sacramento, McKinely Park in East Sacramento, and William Land Park in Land Park. Additional parks will be added in the future.
