A large amount of land in the plan area is designated as Industrial (1,494 acres or 17 percent), with about 42 percent (630 acres) still vacant. Similarly, residentially-designated lands also account for a large part of the North Sacramento Community Plan area with about 3,763 acres (44 percent), 655 acres (17 percent) of which are vacant. The entire plan area covers about 8,688 acres of land, with 1,482 acres of vacant designated lands.
In March 2007, the Sacramento City Council authorized staff to expand work on the 2030 General Plan to include a review of the city's community plans. This review transformed the community plans from stand-alone documents (separate from the 1988 General Plan) into chapters of the 2030 General Plan.
The process involved removing redundant or conflicting community plan policies and creating a consistent outline for all community plans to follow in the future.
The community plan chapters serve primarily as placeholders for future work, if and when such efforts are approved and funded by the Sacramento City Council.
