South Natomas Community Plan

This planning area is bounded by the American River on the south, the Sacramento River and Interstate 80 on the west, Interstate 80 on the north, and the Natomas East Main Drainage Canal (also known as Steelhead Creek) on the east. Land use in this 5,064 acre area is governed by the South Natomas Community Plan. A majority of land in the Plan area is designated for residential uses (2,182 acres). This is followed by Park/Open Space lands (948 acres) and commercial and office uses (631 acres). Residentially designated lands have the most vacant acreage at 220 acres. In addition, Office/Office Park designated areas have about 148 acres vacant. In all, the South Natomas Community Plan area consists of about 5,064 acres, 12 percent (590 acres) of which are vacant.

Review Efforts

In March 2007, the Sacramento City Council authorized staff to expand work on the 2030 General Plan to include a review of the city's community plans. This review transformed the community plans from stand-alone documents (separate from the 1988 General Plan) into chapters of the 2030 General Plan.

The process involved removing redundant or conflicting community plan policies and creating a consistent outline for all community plans to follow in the future.

The community plan chapters serve primarily as placeholders for future work, if and when such efforts are approved and funded by the Sacramento City Council.
