With your help, we are going to build an amazing playground over seven days, Monday June 3 – Sunday, June 9. (Yes, we added a day to make sure that we build the best playground possible for the children of Sacramento.) The build crew will work in three shifts: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 12:30 PM – 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM.*

It is extremely important that we know when you will be there, not only so we make sure we have enough people to get the playground built, but also so we enough delicious food for everyone and that our childcare area is sufficiently staffed.

In addition to letting us know which days and times you plan to be at the build, please also let us know which tasks you would like to do – skilled or unskilled building, food or childcare (“skilled” equals being able to use power tools, e.g. cut a straight line with a circular saw). Lastly, if you do need childcare, please indicate how many children you plan to bring and how old they are. Please note: unless a parent is helping provide childcare, all children must be potty trained. We will not be changing diapers or asking you to come off the build site to do so.

Since this is a community event, you’ll have an opportunity to meet and work alongside great people from all over the city. But wouldn’t it be even more fun with a couple of friends? If friends or family members haven’t signed up yet, please encourage them to do so ASAP.

Based on the input of over 1,000 local school children and other members of our community, the consultant, Play By Design, has designed an incredible playground. At this point, we just need you to help us make sure that the rock wall, the playhouse, the trolley, the steamboat and all the other features that are going to make it so much fun, get built. See you at the build!

On July 21, 2012, about one-third of the beloved McKinley playground was burned. Join Councilmember Steve Cohn and the Rebuild McKinley Steering Committee and Play by Design in rebuilding the McKinley playground.

Neighborhood school children were asked to complete a homework assignment where they were to describe their favorite playground elements and draw their idea of the perfect playground. On the morning of January 11, Dennis Wille, Play by Design designer, and select committee members visited local elementary schools where they collected the assignments and interviewed children to gather ideas for their dream playground. Mr. Wille then spent the afternoon developing a schematic design that was unveiled to the public the same evening at a community meeting.

The theme of the playground will be essentially East Sacramento, with an intent to reflect its history and sense of place. To this end, the playground will have elements such as a trolley, architectural elements reminiscent of the Alhambra Theater and natural elements such as logs and stones. The playground may also include other features reminiscent of Sacramento's past and present. To view a 3D rendering of the design, click here.
