Moldova
GEOGRAPHY
Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova, located in Eastern Europe between Romania (to the west) and Ukraine (to the east). The Republic of Moldova is approximately the size of the state of Maryland. The topography consists primarily of rolling hills and farmland, with a small forested region in the center of the country. Two major rivers, the Prut and the Nistru rivers run generally north to south through the country. Moldova has shipping access to the Black Sea via the Danube River Delta at the southernmost tip of Moldova.
HISTORY
Moldova’s history dates back to the Roman Empire and the rule of King Decebal. Moldova was led to prominence in medieval times by its patriarch and national hero, Stephen the Great, who ruled between 1457 and 1504. Since that time, Moldova’s territory has been diminished by international treaties, following World War I and World War II.
EDUCATION
Chisinau is home to the Moldavian Academy of Sciences, the Polytechnic University, a Medical School, and the Chisinau State University.
INDUSTRIES
Chisinau’s most developed industries are power engineering and diversified mechanical engineering (centrifugal pumps, electric transformers, and casting machines), mostly concentrated in Transdniestria. |

CLIMATE
The climate of Chisinau is quite similar to that of the Northeastern U.S. There is a long, mild growing season followed by a brief, but severe, winter.

1,000,000 in the Chisinau Metropolitan area and 5,000,000 in Moldova.
TRANSPORTATION
The primary transport of goods into and out of Moldova is via truck. Air travel to and from Moldova is limited to the Chisinau Airport.
