Sac ranks high on list of most solar--generated cities

Last month, Sacramento was ranked 10th among cities in California in terms of the number of solar installations and seventh for overall solar generation capacity. The latest installations at three City facilities helped boost the City’s ranking in the state. See a print version of the story here.

On December 2, the City of Sacramento in partnership with SolarCity and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) celebrated the completion of a massive solar project (1.9MW-DC) on four City locations that is expected to produce about 2.6 million kilowatt-hours in the first year, enough to power approximately 250 area homes.

The project, approved by City Council in March 2011, includes the installation of over 8,000 solar panels at the City South Area Corporation Yard, Meadowview Service Center, City Hall, and 300 Richards Blvd. There was no upfront cost to the City, and the projects are expected to create nearly 250 local jobs. The four projects include the installation of panels on solar support structures and on roof space. In addition, it will provide city employees and customers shade for parking and reduce heat island effect
