R Street lit up the night Thursday, Jan. 18, as the grand opening event attracted many, despite soggy and chilly weather conditions. The historic R Street section from 10th to 13th Street was recently transformed from a neglected industrial corridor to a now safer and brighter street.

The event was held at the corner of 10th and R Street in a warehouse between the Fox & Goose Pub and Restaurant and the Art Foundry. Jerry Way was the emcee (seen above.) He and Councilmember Rob Fong, also above, turned on the new R Street arch and street lights for the first time.

Thanks to the addition of safer walkways for pedestrians, a newly paved roadway, preservation of historic rail lines, public art and a grand archway, the street is now a catalyst for more transit-oriented development and restaurant and entertainment venues. The 13th through 16th street blocks of R Street are next in line for a facelift.

The $5.7 million project was made possible by federal money, a grant from Sacramento Area Council of Governments, Capitol Area Development Authority funds and the City’s share of local Measure A half-cent sales tax revenue.
