Transportation Programming Guide

The Transportation Programming Guide (TPG) is a comprehensive document that prioritizes the City’s transportation projects to provide the City Council with information when making project funding decisions.  Transportation projects are ranked according to criteria that are approved by City Council. Criteria are developed and updated to reflect the City’s current policies and priorities.

The TPG process is divided into several tasks including: developing and revising project scoring criteria for each program area; scoring and ranking projects; and writing the final text of the document.  Throughout the TPG process, staff consults with the TPG Community Advisory Committee (CAC), a staff working group, and the community.  The staff working group consists of representatives from Planning, Economic Development, Traffic Engineering, Street Maintenance, and the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA).  Ultimately, the City Council approves changes to the scoring criteria and approves the scored and ranked project list.

2010 Transportation Programming Guide Project List Update

The Department of Transportation is currently updating the project lists for the 2010 Transportation Programming Guide (TPG) to be published in January, 2010. This is an opportunity to submit your transportation project needs and ideas in the following categories:

Major Street Improvements
Includes road widening, road extensions or connections, grade separations (overpasses or underpasses), intersection construction, or other large road modifications

Traffic Signals
Includes new traffic signals or roundabouts for controlling traffic at intersections. Intersections are evaluated to see if a traffic signal is warranted. Other traffic control measures may be installed and then monitored for effectiveness.

Bicycle Section
Includes on-street bikeways, off-street bike/pedestrian trails, and bike/pedestrian bridges

Streetscape Enhancements
Includes landscaping of street medians, curbside planters, etc.

Pedestrian Improvements
Includes adding or improving sidewalks and/or crosswalks

Speed Humps/Lumps
Roadway segments are evaluated for possible installation of Speed Humps or Lumps to control speed in residential areas, park areas, and school zones.

You can submit your project ideas for the 2010 TPG by contacting Suzan Tobin at stobin@cityofsacramento.org or call 916 808 7803. Please be specific about the location, the concern, and the type of improvements needed. Project ideas should be submitted by the end of July, 2009.
