Sacramento Streetcar Planning Study / Reports and Resources
What is the project?
The City of Sacramento created a streetcar plan, which defines a streetcar network and an initial starter line to serve the Central City area and link key destinations within Sacramento and West Sacramento. See project area map and starter route here.
Four primary streetcar routes or route segments, located within the core of the Central City, comprise the heart of the draft Sacramento streetcar network. They are located in the area bounded by the Sacramento River on the west, H Street on the north, Broadway on the south, and the Union Pacific Railroad (e.g., between 19th and 20th Street) on the east. These routes can be operated independently, as phases, or part of a loop configuration once all the lines are constructed.
Two additional streetcar routes are recommended in areas planned for major development/redevelopment. This includes the Railyards and River District areas and the Arden Mall/Cal Expo areas.
The recommended starter line would connect the Sacramento Convention Center and adjacent hotels, the K Street Mall, the Sacramento Valley Station/Intermodal Terminal, the planned Entertainment and Sports Complex (ESC), Old Sacramento, and the City of West Sacramento via the Tower Bridge.
The City will likely purchase a modern streetcar system such as pictured here.

Why was the study conducted?
The adoption of a route for the starter line will position the City to pursue federal funds and move into the next stage of project implementation, which includes preparing preliminary design and environmental studies.
How was the plan funded?
The plan was funded by a federal grant from the Sacramento Area Council of Governments.
What is the project timeline?
The final study report was presented to the Sacramento City Council on February 28, 2012. See the presentation.
How was stakeholder input being provided?
The project team assembled a Business Advisory Committee and a Citizens Advisory Committee that included representatives of numerous neighborhood, business, environmental and other special interest organizations in Sacramento to ensure significant community input.
